Due to the Juneteenth holiday on Monday, June 19, the Whitehall Town Council met for their monthly meeting a bit off schedule, on Tuesday, June 20, 2023. The meeting was missing its usual reports from the Mayor and outside entities, making for a short meeting, running less than 45 minutes. The largest item on the agenda for the evening was Town Attorney Ed Guza introducing Sam Martin to serve as Town prosecutor for the next six months, ending December 21, 2023. It is an excellent time to be a business owner in Montana. Americans from all corners of our nation are beginning to get back out and adventure and many of them are coming to our great state. This increased traffic, combined with our burgeoning technology sector here in Bozeman, has made for a stronger and healthier economy. A key factor in the economic growth of the Gallatin Valley is access to air travel. This year Congress can help facilitate additional growth in air travel options for...

Dear Editor, Montana's 1972 constitution guarantees its citizens a right to "a clean and healthful environment in Montana for present and future generations." The 2023 trial of Held V. State of Montana, a lawsuit brought by 16 Montana youth, attempts to show how the state government's longstanding energy policies violate this constitutional right by favoring fossil fuel industries with high carbon emissions. The lawsuit is named for plaintiff Rikki Held, age 22, a fifth-generation Montanan...
We dress up for people we want to be undressed with. Kids are much more accepting of other people than adults are. Comparing an animal’s intelligence with a kid's age sounds cool, but comparing a kid's intelligence with certain animals sounds awful. It’s a good thing we can’t hear our eyeballs move inside their sockets. People care more about animals than humans in games and movies. Every big city has had a point in its history where there was only one high-rise in the entire city and it must’ve looked super awkward. Paper cuts will become...
JUNE, PART II June 1897 was a busy news month, especially the second half. In Missoula, a large stable owned by the Higgins brothers was burned by an arsonist resulting in the death of five horses and a young 16 year- old practice boy. In the Big Hole Basin, William Christenson, a wealthy landowner known as the terror of that country, was shot by Sheriff Smith when he tried to escape justice. Outside of Montana, Mason City, Iowa was struck by a cyclone that killed several people and left a destr...

We are very excited to announce that the Town will be coordinating the Whitehall Frontier Days Ranch Rodeo in 2023. As all of you know, the Town of Whitehall Recreational Complex is solely run on our general tax base, leaving us with...

Because of the continued cool, wet weather, we are continuing to collect the Dalmatian toadflax stem boring weevil Mencius janthiniformis. We have requests for over 70 releases and have only been able to collect 10 releases so far. We will be trying to collect more this week as the weather warms. Wish us luck! It is very heartening to see how much damage these skinny little black weevils are doing to Dalmatian toadflax along the I-90 corridor in the Missoula area and along the 1-15 corridor betw...
Driving back to Colorado State University with a van full of students after a day of working to heal some beat-up land north of Fort Collins, I wondered: Could ecological restoration be a new form of outdoor recreation? We’d spent the day building a sawbuck fence around a spring. From the spring, gravity would carry the water through a pipe to a stock tank in the middle of the pasture. On this land protected by a conservation easement, cows would no longer drink, pee, and poop while trampling the spring’s vegetation. The spring could rec...

State and local public health officials are reminding Montanans to be aware of the risk of exposure to rabies as summer approaches. The risk for potential encounters between humans and wild animals increases during spring and summer because of the time spent hiking and engaging in other outdoor activities. On June 13, 2023, DPHHS received the first report of a rabid animal this year. A striped skunk in Powder River County tested positive for rabies. In 2022, 13 animals submitted for rabies...
