At the March 18th meeting of the Whitehall School Board, it was reported that while three teachers would not be returning in the upcoming school year, the school had several promising candidates interviewing for the positions. After 25 years in the special education department, Corrie Bateman will retire. Zach Kosicky, a high school science teacher, will focus on his Army Reserves position and be the Madison County Sanitarian. Finally, it was announced that high school math teacher Lori Roys...
Local health officials are monitoring the ongoing measles outbreaks in the United States closely, and preparing for the chance that measles could make its way into Montana and Lewis and Clark County. “Starting this week, we will be sharing regular public service announcements with information about all things measles,” says Shelly Maag, LCPH Public Health Nurse Supervisor. “We have also created a webpage with an extensive fact sheet of questions and answers for concerned residents to read and reference.” Measles is the single most contagi...
CONVOY OF HOPE: On Wednesday, March 19, many volunteers made light work at the Whitehall Town Hall as they distributed items donated by the Convoy of Hope in a well-organized distribution line. Items included kids-themed bathroom, children's toys, and household products. All of this brought to the Whitehall community by Convoy of Hope, Town of Whitehall, and area churches....
Dear Editor, At times, the Montana Legislative body is out of touch with the citizens of Montana. HJ24 does not reflect public opinion concerning public lands and waterways, as the bill purports. The bill supports Utah politicians' failed lawsuit seeking to find that federal public land ownership in Utah is unconstitutional. The courts have found that Federal public land ownership is constitutionally legal. Whether you're a MAGA, liberal, conservative, or moderate, most Montanans value our...
Dear Editor, "Our Constitution was made for only a moral and religious people." - John Adams Convincing the masses that the fairy tale economy (where reckless spending without consequences) is over is probably not going to occur. Desperate for the security of the status quo is why those on the losing end of this fantasy are angry and very vocal. While it's not without compassion that one can consider the struggle that lies before them to regain their financial security, it comes down to the...
Dear Editor, Because I am not a student of history, I want to understand present times by posing the following question: What are the historical consequences when a person with political power does the following things? 1. Makes the Legislative branch of government irrelevant. 2. Attacks judges and the Judicial system. 3. Attacks "the enemy within," including anyone who disagrees and speaks up (minorities, political opponents, etc). 4. Attacks academics. 5. Attacks allies. 6. Speaks with a...
Dear Editor, As Senators, we are charged with the responsibility to serve the people of Montana by working together to shape laws that are in the best interest of our state. As Republican Senators, we believe we have been tasked with pursuing fiscal responsibility and limited, effective government. Sadly, this session has been marked by controversy as we’ve learned one of our own party leaders may have broken the trust of Montana voters. When the Senate voted to send former President E...
Dear Editor, I received a postcard this weekend from Senator Daines and President Trump accusing the Biden administration of breaking Medicare with price controls. The only conclusion that can be drawn from the carefully constructed lies it contained is that the pharmaceutical industry's lobbyists have increased pressure on them to roll back Medicare's ability to negotiate prices on behalf of its members. The lies that Medicare's ability to negotiate on the behalf of its members will prevent...
No one ever skips breakfast because breakfast means breaking the fast. Therefore, those who say they skip breakfast eat it later in the day and call it by another name. Someone who obsessively collects things and refuses to part with them is dubbed a hoarder and said to be mentally ill, yet someone who obsessively amasses money and doesn’t part with it is defended and dubbed sane. If humans invent anti-aging technology, family pictures would look like groups of friends who happen to share the same last name. When the poo starts flying, it’s a g...
Fashions have changed, towns have become cities, and cities are metropolitan areas, but some things are not much different now than they were 100 years ago. The following news items are taken as written in March 1925 editions of the Jefferson Valley News. Outside of Montana, headlines include the Federal Probation Act, which became law and allowed probation as an option for a federal prison sentence. Calvin Coolidge was inaugurated for a second time, with the event broadcast on the radio for the...

It always touches my heart when I miss a week and patrons come in see if I am alright or ask other staff where I am. That is one of the wonderful things about living in a small town where everyone knows everyone...

On the evening of Friday, March 21, 2025, Ellen Marie (Berg) Gillespie passed away peacefully in her home. Ellen was born in Butte, Montana on December 8, 1933, to Edwin John and Agnes Filimena (George) Berg. Ellen enjoyed growing up in Butte with her sister Dorothy Jean (Dode), who was 10 months younger than her. She always lamented that she could not pick on Dode during the two months of the year that they were the same age. A highlight of Ellen’s youth was when she and her sister traveled w...

Any way to let these people know that they are loved. As this is the second mission team sent from the church, water treatment and installation...

A Senate Fish and Game Committee meeting last week was dedicated entirely to three hours of fiery debate on two controversial gray wolf management bills from Rep. Paul Fielder, R-Thompson Falls. House Bill 258 would extend the seven-month wolf hunting season by another three months and House Bill 259 would legalize infrared and thermal imagery for wolf management. Fish, Wildlife and Parks Chief of Conservation Policy Quentin Kujala, speaking for the department director, opposed the season’s extension into Spring. “A spring hunting season dur...
