We know more about most animals than they know about themselves. James Bond wouldn’t last 30 seconds as a real spy. We created a society that is so hard to live in, that in order to not live in a constant state of anxiety, some of us need marijuana or anti-depressants. Mathematics are confusing because of the language, not the concepts. Even if we all spoke the same language we wouldn’t understand everyone. A downhill battle sounds just as bad as an uphill battle. Everything does happen for a reason, but people never acknowledge that those rea...
Dear Editor, On behalf of the Hillbillies 4-H club, I would like to draw attention to the generosity of all our local, county, and state-level individuals, families, and businesses that support 4-H. As sponsors and supporters, your contributions allow members to have many opportunities that would not otherwise be possible. These opportunities allow us to build life skills where we “learn by doing” in areas such as science, health, art, leisure, agriculture, and civic engagement just to name a few. Recently, we would like to specifically tha...

March Part 2 The March weather "lion" was roaring in 1897 very much like now. The U. S. House of Representatives had just elected a new Speaker of the House, Republican Tom Reed; the U. S. supreme court ruled that states have the power to tax franchises of corporations, such as express, telegraph, and railroad companies; and the Mississippi river was flooding the lowlands of Arkansas. The following articles are taken as written from the March 12 and 19, 1897 editions of the Jefferson Valley...
MARCH 25, 1998 Jefferson County, with a July 1997 estimated population of 9,878, was the second fastest growing county in Montana, according to statistics released by the U.S. Bureau Of Census. The figures, which cover a span from 1990 to 1997, show the population in Jefferson County grew 24.4 percent, second only to Ravalli County’s 38.2 percent. Madison County, with a population of 6,899, grew 15.2 percent over the same period. Of Montana’s 56 counties, Jefferson County is the 22nd most populated county, and Madison County is the 30th most po...
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Pamela Todd on March 2, 2023. Pamela was born on March 12, 1960, and was the beloved daughter of David Lee Todd Sr. She was also survived by her siblings David, Kimberly, and Cheryl. Pamela was a kind and compassionate person. and had a gift for helping others. Pamela’s family would like to express their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. They ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they mourn the loss of their beloved sister and d...
OWEN DAVID SHANK St. Patty's Day 2023 dawned bright and clear. For a change, the ever-present wind was fairly calm as well. This was also the day my dad, Owen David Shank (who went by David) decided to finally leave this present life. Some would say that he graduated to the heavenly realms. Along with my mother, his wife of almost 60 years, Dad had recently moved to Winter Garden, Florida, roughly six months ago. One of my sisters and her husband converted one end of their house into a kind of...
The Jefferson Valley Friends of the NRA is preparing for the 2023 fundraising banquet on Friday, April 14, 2023, at the Madison County Fairgrounds Pavilion in Twin Bridges. It is always a fun event. We are always looking for people who want to help. Volunteers are so important in so many things Whitehall does. There are so many ways to help, in person becoming a part of the committee, being a sponsor at any level, and or donating your time or money. One specific way of helping the Friends is by sponsoring the banquet event. Not only are you hel...
This Friday is PBSKids Storytime with Deanna Mydland, our own special word wizard. She always comes with multiple crafts, stories, games, and other activities for our youngest readers. Storytimes will be at 9:30 AM, 10:30 AM, and 1 PM. We are always excited to see all the great things she has to do. One of the most interesting things about authors is how they can completely change their writing styles and assume other identities when exploring different genres. I was recently told to read the...
March is a month that shines a light on some very important topics for our student population: nutrition (including the importance of breakfast) and sleep. There are plenty of age-appropriate tasks you can teach your child to be helpful in the kitchen. This resource breaks it down by age groups. Obviously, safety is key and you know your child best, so until you have seen them work with a utensil like a peeler or a knife, don’t think they will be able to do it just because they fall into these age groups. It can be a very good bonding e...
Q: What is Artificial Intelligence? A: Artificial Intelligence, or AI is a hot topic in the news recently. In fact, last week’s Tech Question column was written by a powerful new AI platform called ChatGPT which stands for Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer. Before anyone goes bananas and hides in their bunker from the robot uprising, that sort of thing is not happening…yet. AI has been around for a while, in fact the first presentation of AI was given at a conference in 1956, so it is not...

The Easter Bunny and the vividly colored eggs and treats he leaves behind are one of the time-honored traditions of this spring holiday. However, many other customs also are enjoyed during Easter celebrations, including a holiday table resplendent with delicious foods. After the main meal is cleared, family and guests can relish in any number of sweet offerings. From pastries to coconut-covered cakes cut in the shapes of bunnies, there's often no shortage of tasty options. Carrot cake is a...

Has someone made you a promise and failed to follow through? Have you ever broken a promise? If we are honest I would presume all of us can answer “yes” to both questions. The simple truth is we are broken people living in a broken world; however, we have hope. Perseverance and grit are Christ-like characteristics to develop throughout the course of our life. Although we have no way to know exactly, most reckoning suggests that by the time this letter was penned, the larger following of Jesus was already in the thousands. In this document con...
