  • Council Hears Negative Feedback in Regard to Infant at Work Proposal

    ELIZABETH PULLMAN, Whitehall Ledger|Mar 20, 2024

Babies on the brain seemed to be the main topic at the March meeting of the Whitehall Town Council, held Monday, March 19th, at the Town Hall. But not just babies, but babies in the Town Hall office. The Council is currently researching whether or not to allow babies in the workplace, as two town employees are currently expecting. Earlier this month, a meeting regarding maternity leave and infants in the workplace was called into executive session. In the meantime, the Council has looked into safeguards, current practices elsewhere, and...

  • Dear Editor: SB 442 is a Bill For All Montanans

MIKE LANG, State Senate District 17|Mar 20, 2024

Dear Editor: SB 442: A Bill for All Montanans The legislative session in Montana is a full-contact sport. Bills get introduced that stoke controversy and debate. My bill (SB 442) was no different, but we ended up with a bill Montanans could be proud of. Thousands of Montanans convinced 130 of 150 legislators to vote for SB 442. It was popular because Montanans could put aside long-standing disagreements and work with their neighbors to help craft a bill that invests in every one of us. As...

  • Dear Editor: Montana Families Deserve Financial Freedom

MARY CAFERRO, Vice Chair of the House Appropriations Committee|Mar 20, 2024

Dear Editor, Montana families deserve the financial freedom that comes from good health and a hard day's work. It is only fair. Under Gianforte's government, the uninsured rate has increased by 127,000 Montanans of all ages. His approach to Medicaid redetermination has failed. We all will pay for Gianforte's comedy of errors, but wait. There is nothing funny about human suffering-or so most of us believe. As a matter of fact, the Governor is hurting defenseless children, making it harder to...

  • Thought Provokers: 3/20/2024

    Mar 20, 2024

Young people’s goals have shifted from having a house by 30 to not having a roommate by 40. People are vastly overestimating their capacity to hit a target with a gun. Everyone in The Simpsons universe has hair that’s a different color than their skin, except the Simpson children. Some person in history has the record of feeling the most pain ever. The using of clockwise and counter-clockwise will eveually die out after people gradually stop using rotating clocks and watches. There’s a good chance that someone you don’t know has told a story a...

  • Out Town 125 and 100 Years Ago - March, Part II

    ARLENE WEBER, Jefferson Valley Museum|Mar 20, 2024

8 YEARS AGO - MARCH, PART II: Spring began in March 1898. While local farmers were preparing for a new planting of their crops, things were a little more tumultuous in other parts of the state and country. In Missoula, Mr. F.W. Morris, who was in the new medical profession of osteopathist, was arrested for practicing medicine without a certificate from the Montana medical board. California Governor Budd asked Montana Governor Smith to help his state celebrate its 50th anniversary of being admi...

  • Between the Stacks: 3/20/2024

    JEANNIE FERRISS, Whitehall Community Library|Mar 20, 2024

One of the great things about belonging to the Broad Valleys Federation is the training they hold every spring and fall. Last week I enjoyed two days of learning, networking, and meeting the new librarians in our area. One of the training courses held was on leadership and taught by a retired Army Ranger who turned academic. His ideas on leadership definitely had a military slant but as the daughter of an army man who then worked with the military on construction projects, his presentation...

The Board had asked for hard numbers from the fall and winter seasons, which Nieskens shared. The following shows the sport, total amount of...

  • Rotarians' Recycling Service Project

    ARLENE WEBER, Whitehall Rotary Club|Mar 20, 2024

For many years, Whitehall Rotarians have been recycling aluminum cans as one of their fundraising and community service projects. People have generously dropped their cans off at the county dump and the bin next to Jefferson Fresh Foods. Every couple of months, club members spend one to two hours sorting the dozens of bags into large white bags donated by a local talc plant. The bags are then hauled to a recycling center in Butte. Part of the money received is donated to Liberty Place to help...

    JACK SMITH, Three Forks Voice|Mar 20, 2024

In the past several months, an alarming number of wrong-way motorists have been arrested for driving the wrong way on Interstate 90 near Three Forks. The disturbing recent string of incidents turned fatal on January 4 when 22-year-old Laysa Grewell was killed following a head-on collision with a wrong-way driver at mile marker 278 just outside of Three Forks. To reduce the incidents on the Interstate, the Montana Department of Transportation will soon be placing nine new wrong-way sign systems...

  • Tech Questions? Get the Answers: 3/20/2024

TIM SCHOBER, White Hat Tech Solutions|Mar 20, 2024

How Firewalls Keep You Safe Online In today's digital world, where computers are used for everything from shopping to banking, staying safe online is a top priority. One of the most important tools in our cybersecurity toolkit is a firewall. But what exactly is a firewall, and how does it protect your computer? Think of a firewall as a security guard for your computer. Its job is to watch all the incoming and outgoing traffic, like a gatekeeper, and ensure that only the good stuff gets through...

  • Whitehall Chamber Corner: How Business Owners Can Standout at Networking Events

    Whitehall Chamber of Commerce|Mar 20, 2024

First, you’re probably thinking if everyone in the chamber (and beyond) reads this article and follows the advice here, no one will be unforgettable because we’ll all be following the same instructions. But in the words of the famous Dr. Seuss, “There is no one alive more you-er than you,” so being the same isn’t possible if you’re true to who you are. With that in mind, let’s discuss how you can begin to stand out and make worthwhile connections, even if you hate networking. Why Should You Attend a Networking Event? You either love networki...

We believe we have found a partner who shares our commitment to customers and is deeply entrenched in Montana. Subject to regulatory approval and satisfaction of other closing conditions, we expect the transaction to close late in the third quarter or early fourth quarter of 2024. • RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Savory Sweet Potato Mash

    Mar 20, 2024

Easter Sunday is celebrated on March 31, 2024. Easter is a day of spiritual reflection, celebration, and an opportunity to gather with family members for a delicious dinner. Traditional main courses for Easter include lamb and ham, so home cooks may want to select side dishes that can work with both. Sweet potatoes are a healthy option that also are tasty and nutritious. While some people associate sweet potatoes with the marshmallow-covered dish common around Thanksgiving, they can be sweet or...

  • Just Ask Georgia: 3/20/2024

    GEORGIA|Mar 20, 2024

Georgia, I have a question, Why don’t people say what they mean? Alright...here we go. I was invited to the birthday party of a colleague I don’t know all that well but am friendly with. He invites me and states, “No gifts, please.” So, I went to the party and, per request, I didn’t bring a gift; I then discovered that everyone else had. So, he was a bit upset with me the next day at work because I didn’t bring a gift. I reminded him, and he said, “No gifts,” but he seemed upset about the situation. Should I have taken a gift? Does No Mean No...

  • CONNECTING POINT: Paradoxical Truths

    BILL LANES|Mar 20, 2024

Jesus had an uncanny ability to communicate truths for everyday life because He is known as the “author of life” (John 1:3). His perspective matters and there is wisdom in listening and applying His teachings daily. In last week’s column, pointed out in Luke 6 how Jesus offered a different approach to what it means to be “blessed,” one that we are not accustomed to. Typically, we associate “blessing” with the good stuff; those things in life which center around positive physical and emotional experiences. Jesus turns the message a complete 18...
