The Whitehall Town Council unanimously approved a request from the Jefferson Local Development Corporation (JLDC) to use $20,000 in TIF funds to further the Whitehall Master Plan project at their February meeting on Monday, February 8, 2021. The application, if approved, would hire a qualified consultant to design and create a comprehensive Master Plan which targets r...
Jefferson County's new Vista volunteer, David Butler, probably thought Montana winters were docile when he arrived three weeks ago; then the snow hit this weekend. For the Florida native, the past three weeks have been a time of adjustment – not just to the weather, but to his new responsibilities to the county. Since 1965 AmeriCorps has been offering the Vista Volunteer program to communities looking to fight poverty and overcome local hardships. Through capacity building activities such as f...
I have lived in small towns most of my life – with my longest tenancy of over 20 years being in Whitehall. As I’ve said, I was a military brat who moved A LOT and we were always lucky to find small towns to live in, suburbs or subdivisions, that were just outside the “bigger” cities where my dad was stationed. I remember growing up knowing a few neighbors here and there, but we were never somewhere long enough to know the whole neighborhood, let alone the whole town. That is, until we moved to Whitehall, which is one of the things I love mo...
Arlene Weber is the first generation in her family to be born in Montana, though her family has been here since 1910. Her father was born out of state; he would often tell her stories about his home state of Iowa, but also the town of Whitehall, MT they lived in. Her father and grandfather have always inspired her love of history which has guided Arlene through her life. She was told stories of her Grandmother coming over on a clipper ship and how her grandmother was around for the 1900s Haley's...

Isaac Skogen was giving up some weight and lost to N. Bloodnick (ANA). Alley Antonsen had a dominate first period pin over L. Estep (ANA). Dallon Lanes battled to a 6-2 lead and then pinned B. Wolfe...
Dear Jo, So, have you ever looked up into the night sky at the stars and heavens and wondered if “we’re alone”? I’m here to tell you- WE ARE NOT! I’ve met someone and she or maybe he is just the person or thing for me. Do you think we can make it work? Signed, VERY Long Distance Relationship Dear Long Distance, I am assuming you are referring to the aliens, little green people, purple people eaters? Most people have trouble with relationships that span a few hundred miles, let alone a few hundred light years. My advice would be to keep your...
FEBRUARY 1921 PART 1 We will start with some news, as it was written, from the February 2 & 8, 1895 Whitehall Zephyr. The dance given by the band boys on the night of January 25th was not nearly so largely attended as on previous occasions. Much of the cause for this was the very inclement weather then prevailing, and also the fact that the revival being held at Fish Creek kept many away who had heretofore been regular attendants. Among those present were: Misses Ethel Hind, Lonie Woolverton,...
Gail and Topper Giono were recognized Monday morning to 15 years of service to the Deerlodge National Forest above and beyond the call of duty. Jefferson County has “a real serious problem,” Gam...
a few important events to celebrate. In the United States, one such event is Presidents' Day, which this year will be observed on Monday, February 15. Presidents' Day honors both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, two influential presidents who were born in February. Some may recall a legend about George Washington and a cherry tree, as it's one of the most popular tales tied to the nation's first president. The original story has a young George receiving a hatchet as a gift when he is six...
