The Whitehall Study Commission will be mailing out questionnaires to all postal patrons in the Whitehall Post Office area. Originally these questionnaires were planned to be released this week; however, they will now be mailed in March. Each questionnaire will be addressed to the postal customer registered to that post office box. The Local Government Review process is complicated; its scope and intent are easily misunderstood. But it’s important to know that the review is not a platform for airing discontent or mobilizing change in the ways t...

Dear Editor, A Revenue Stream Fit for a King: So, here's how it works: "You want to do business in my town? It'll cost you 25% of what you make, otherwise, I'll break your legs. We here at the 'mob' call that an income tax. If this isn't enough, you will be compelled to use our fiat currency to measure your true productivity, and we'll control the value of that. Never mind what you think it's worth; we'll tell you what it's worth." Believe it or not, this is the business model of how your...
Dear Editor, I don't want to talk about it, but I will. What an injustice the school officials are doing by not letting the young adults put this play on in the school. With Montana having a very high suicide rate, these are the very ones who should be able to see it at school. They live with the stress of life, and most of us as parents have no idea what they go through and how much pain they are in. I am a parent of a child who committed suicide in 1998. Every day I think about it. If one...
Anniversaries commemorate when two people were joined. Birthdays commemorate when two people were separated. Most of the Earth’s sky is below you. Spaghetti can hold much less sauce than other varieties of pasta, so it should be served relatively dry, but non-Italian restaurants almost always fail at this. You can hire a clown to perform just for you. Surely, someone has died in surgery because the surgeon had to sneeze. Video games seem like a great way to kill time in a “Groundhog Day” scenario until you realize your progress would reset...

News from around the state varied from murder to severe weather and a multitude of topics in between. Some of the headlines were: A HAMMER DID IT, Murder of Henry Dahlman at Boulder by a Man Known as Frank or "Cap" Carson; SEVENTEEN B...

The Whitehall Community Library's Cupid Crew is gearing up for our annual Valentine's delivery on February 14th. If you have a senior who would love a long-stemmed rose for Valentine's Day, please call us at 287-3763 to get on the list. Last year, we almost ran out, so an additional 50 roses were ordered for the Cupid Crew program. This program provides roses for seniors at no cost to the library; our volunteers deliver them. The 21st Century program teamed up with us this year and made cards an...
As parents, we entrust our children's education to schools with the expectation that they will be supported, challenged, and encouraged to grow both academically and personally. Unfortunately, recent Whitehall Middle/High School events have made it clear that this trust has been broken. For months, we have watched the administration, particularly Superintendent Ms. Hannah Nieskens and Principal Mr. Jason Slater, silence students and disregard their voices. The latest incident involving the Whitehall Trojans Drama Club is just one example of a...
Margaret "Peg" Kathryn Whitesitt, 83, of Stevensville passed away peacefully on January 29, 2025 in Stevensville, MT with her family by her side. She was born, along with her twin brother James "Jim," on June 28, 1941 in Great Falls, MT to Stewart "Bud" & Margaret Moore. She spent her childhood in Whitehall, making many trips back and forth to her grandparents homestead. Peg attended school in Whitehall, where she was active in the band as a cornet player. She graduated in 1959 and then...
By the end of the first day of the 2025 Montana State Thespian Festival in Missoula, the 12 bright, young actors from Whitehall High School were wholly exhausted. A few fell asleep during a capstone performance of "Into the Woods" by the University of Montana theater department, as did several dozen of their fellow student actors. It had been a good, full day. That morning, the Whitehall kids had staged a one-act play, "I Don't Want to Talk About It," before several hundred drama students from...

Have you wondered how “best” to transfer your farm or ranch enterprise among family members? Have you started the process but then got frustrated because no plan seemed fair to all? If yes, you will want to attend the “Finding Fairness in Farm and Ranch Transitions” worksho...

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks submitted 9,066 samples for chronic wasting disease testing in 2024-2025 hunting season to date. This is the largest number of CWD samples ever to be collected in a single year in Montana. Many of these samples were collected by hunters themselves. Of those samples, 335 tested positive for the disease, including 202 white-tailed deer, 127 mule deer and six elk. “We’re very excited about the number of samples we collected this season,” said Wildlife Health Program Biologist Bevin McCormick. “Hunters are a huge pa...
The Montana House Fish, Wildlife and Parks Committee tabled one bill and advanced two other bills that would change rules for hunting gray wolves in the state. The wolf-focused bills hit the House Fish, Wildlife and Parks Committee Tuesday, Jan. 21, including House Bill 101, which would classify gray wolves as furbearers. The committee tabled that bill on Friday, Jan. 24. Rep. Jamie Isaly, D-Bozeman, said HB 101, recommended by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, would have put more specific protections on gray wolves while maintaining the...

The House of Representatives has passed House Bill 169, a bill that would allow judges to attend partisan events, seek or accept partisan endorsements, make speeches, publicly endorse, and publicly self-identify with partisan organizations. The bill hinges on the approval of House Bill 39, which would attach party labels to candidates for judicial positions. HB 39 has passed the House and is awaiting judgment in the Senate. Proponents of HB 169, which the House passed on Thursday, Jan. 23, argue it is a realistic move that will allow judges to...

Cupcakes are diminutive, hand-held treats that come in various flavors and styles. Each December 15th, the humble cupcake gets its own day of celebration, but people know well that cupcakes are enjoyed throughout the year, particularly during birthdays and other special occasions. It may seem like there is no way to reinvent the cupcake, but Sticky Cinnamon-Walnut Spirals marry the best of cinnamon rolls with the convenience of a muffin/cupcake tin preparation to form a flavor-packed product...
GEORGIA, I have a question, What if you attended a New Year’s Eve party with seven other families (about 30 people) running around, mostly male? The night goes excellent, and you leave at 12:15 AM after celebrating the beginning of a new year. At 1:05 AM, you get a text that there’s a hole in the wall; a photo accompanies the text and a request to ask your family about it. No one knows anything. This goes on and on into the next day. Finally, the host asks everyone in attendance to donate $25 to fix the hole since we don’t know who did it, t...
