A record number of teams competed last weekend at the 15th annual Cori Bishop, Dave McLaughlin, Steve Dyson Memorial Pool Tournament in Whitehall. McClanahan said he was very pleased with the turnout at the 2017 event. This year's tournament also included a silent auction to raise money for league members Don Hartford and Deanna Wall,...

  • School of Dance offers variety

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 25, 2017

For local resident Allissa Christensen, dancing is in her blood. Christensen comes from a long line of dancers, and likes to say she was raised in a dance studio. She is now sharing both her love for and experience in dance with the residents of Whitehall and surrounding area. In 2015, Christensen started teaching classes one day a week at the Community Center, and in September of 2016 moved the Christensen School of Dance to a new location at 23 West Legion Ave. in Whitehall. She currently...

  • Legislators find common ground in overhauling state sexual assault laws

Michael Siebert, UM Community News Service University of Montana School of Journalism|Jan 25, 2017

Though the 2017 Montana Legislative session has seen more than its fair share of partisan disputes, one issue has united lawmakers — reforming state law on rape and sexual assault. The Montana Senate advanced a package of bills last week that deal with everything from the parental rights of children conceived by rape to the very definition of “consent.” “It’s been a long time coming, and I really appreciate that we’ve kept it out of all of the politics and whatever dynamics could be out there,” said Sen. Diane Sands, D-Missoula, during a Sena...

  • Column: Mud in my ears

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 25, 2017

Every newspaper is a little bit different when it comes to listening to police calls. Some will have the scanner on at all times, some will just turn it on when they hear sirens, and some won't turn it on at all. I've found there has to be some sort of happy medium, but this was gained from experiencing all three. The first newspaper I worked at had the scanner going all the time. It was a town much larger than Whitehall and it never stopped. It was almost impossible to get anything done with...

Zinke had interviewed her, but was unable to communicate with her about the appointment. At any rate, she had the approval of all of Montana’s Congressional representatives. Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 25, 2017

The Whitehall High School boy's basketball team was firing on all cylinders defensively Friday night in a runaway victory over Jefferson County High School. The Trojans (11-1, 6-0 5B) held the rival Panthers to six or less points in three quarters, including giving up just two points in the first period of the 62-24 victory. The game could not have been more different than the first matchup between the two teams last week, a 51-47 Whitehall victory last Tuesday in Boulder. Whitehall would open...

  • Lady Trojans seek balance

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 25, 2017

The Whitehall High School girl's basketball team will look to get things rolling offensively this week in road matchups against 5B rivals Sweet Grass County and Three Forks. The Lady Trojans were impressive on defense in home action last week, but were unable to pickup a victory in the three game home stand. They fell 36-33 to Big Timber, 39-34 to Anaconda, and 33-23 to rival Jefferson. Head coach Herman Gerving said the team's perimeter shooting has not come along as he expected it to, but once...

It was another successful week for the Whitehall high School wrestling team. The team traveled to compete Friday in a mixer against Townsend and Cascade. According to coach Steve Sacry, team scores were not kept at the event, but Whitehall did well, winning all but two of their 12 matches. Sacry said Mike Wilkinson highlighted the night by scoring 18 points in his match. The following day, the Trojan wrestlers competed in a dual tournament against Great Falls Central, Townsend, and Columbus....
