    The Whitehall Country Store Board of Directors recently announced the availability of five $5,000 scholarships to be awarded to graduating Whitehall High School seniors or homeschoolers who will be full-time students enrolled in Fall 2018 classes at an accredited college, university, or trade school.     Pool players from across Southwest Montana will be making their way to Whitehall later this week for the 16th annual Cori Bishop, Dave McLaughlin, Steve Dyson Memorial Pool Tournament. The popular yearly event is scheduled to take place Saturday, January 20 and Sunday, January 21. The Open Scotch Doubles tournament will take place at the Mint Bar, Legends, Two-Bit and Whitehall Community Center.   • Apex application approved by state

    There was good news to end 2017 at the Barrick Golden Sunlight Mine in Whitehall. At the Community Transition Advisory Committee last week, Mine Environmental Superintendent Chuck Buus said the state has accepted their application for the proposed Apex Project, and the next step would be for Tetra Tech of Missoula to complete an Environmental Assessment.   • Officials considering 8 period school day

    With attendance numbers increasing at the two Whitehall secondary schools, officials are looking into the possibility of eight period days. In her monthly report, Principal Hannah Nieskens reported increases at both the high school and middle school. Nieskens said there were two new students at the high school for a total of 141. At the same time last year, the number was 122. Nieskens reported a total of 88 at the middle school, with the number 82 in 2017.     While they were unable to walk away with a victory, the Whitehall High School girls basketball team played some of their best basketball season in the second half of a loss Friday night against Missoula Loyola. After trailing 25-14 at halftime, Whitehall would claw their way back into the game in the fourth quarter and closed to within 43-40 on a Hope Slater free throw with 4:45 left in regulation.     Trailing 16-10 at the end of the first quarter Friday night against Missoula Loyola, the Whitehall High School boys basketball team came out firing on all cylinders in the second quarter. The Trojans outscored the visiting Rams 18-4 in the quarter on their way to a 72-58 victory.     The Whitehall High School wrestling team had six wrestlers place on their way to a third place finish at last week's Choteau Tournament. According to assistant coach Steve Sacry, the tournament featured 31 Class B/C teams, and Whitehall only finished behind Malta and Thompson Falls. "That high of a placing requires a full team effort.     During his time as a player and first eight seasons as head coach of the Whitehall High School boys basketball team, Zach McLean had never left Anaconda's Memorial Gymnasium with a victory. That all changed Thursday night, but it was far from easy.
