By the time you read this I will be almost done with a week at the Montana Library Association (MLA) annual meeting in Billings. MLA provides a myriad of training in all types of areas and relevant issues relating to library funding, new laws, the latest technology, and more. It is also a chance for libraries to network together with new ideas and share programming that has worked well in their communities or maybe not worked so well. It is a mix of academic librarians, school librarians, specialty librarians, and of course, public librarians w...

I just returned from the Broad Valleys Federation meeting and thought I would share a little information about this wonderful organization. There are six different federations in Montana, which are divided into different geographical regions. The Broad Valleys Federation has 21 member libraries and stretches from Helena to Dillon. It includes large libraries such as Bozeman Public, medium libraries such as Whitehall, and smaller libraries. Some of the members are libraries which are a combination of a school and community library, such as the...

Like many people around the country, I am currently watching “Victoria” on television every week. It is a wonderful historical drama about the life of Queen Victoria, one of Great Britain’s longest ruling monarchs. She was only 18 years old when she ascended the throne in June of 1837 and during her lifetime her children and grandchildren would rule over many of the countries in Europe. Victoria reigned for over sixty years until her death in 1901. She was an interesting woman who spoke English, German, French, Italian and Latin; as well as be...

What a great visit we had with Santa on Saturday! The Library staff wishes to express a special thank you to the Friends of the Library for providing goodie bags for the children, refreshments for the adults, setting up the snack tables, and helping the staff clean up afterwards. Of course, a huge thank you to our dear Santa who listened to almost 100 children tell him their most-wanted requests for this year. I hope the parents were able to take great pictures with all the excitement. However did we manage without cameras on our cellphones?...

It was the third year of the Civil War, 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln declared that each November there would be a national day of Thanksgiving. It was based on a celebration which first took place in 1621, when the Wampanoag Indians and the Plymouth settlers shared a meal after the fall crops had been harvested. The New World had been a cruel lesson for the pilgrims with only 51 settlers surviving out of 102 original arrivals. Now life was once again hard for a nation at war with itself. Would the long Civil War ever end? It would take...

On November 11, 1918 at 11:00 a.m. World War I Allied Supreme Commander Ferdinand Foch met with the German delegation to sign the armistice aboard his railway carriage near Compiegne, France. Although many people think of this event as the end of the First World War, it was initially a 30 day cease-fire agreement which was continually renewed until the formal signing of the peace treaty a year later. In 1954 this day was changed to honor all persons who have served in the armed forces of the United States and is celebrated as Veterans Day. In...

How would you feel if a total stranger had the authority to tell you what you could or could not read? This week the Library is recognizing the right of all Americans to read what they wish through “Banned Books Week”, September 25-October 1. People are always surprised when they see which books have been banned and for what reason. The fact that the Bible, If I Ran the Zoo by Dr. Seuss, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, and The Call of the Wild, by Jack London have all been banned shows a wide div...

Please call the Library to sign up for this set of classes so we may have enough paints and paper for everyone.
