In order to fill in a footprint one must read for 15 minutes to someone else or to themselves. The program is open to anyone birth to 120 years old and registration sheets are for the entire family this year. Summer Reading is almost here, and we are celebrating with a mystery. Readers from birth to 120 may sign up at the Library for a summer of free lunches, prizes, programs, and great books. We are going to sign up families together so those with multiples will not have to fill out forms for everyone. The program begins on June 5th and the June calendars are available at the front desk. The Great Library Treasure Mystery will run until July 27th, and anyone may sign up anytime during June or until July 27th. We understand that many of our...

The Library will be closed on Monday, May 29, in honor of Memorial Day. We will be open regular hours the rest of the week. One question I get asked every summer is: Will the Library be open different hours? Our schedule is set for the year according to when we have the most patrons in and what times are best for different programs. We are open 48 hours a week, which is more than many libraries our size. Current hours for the Library are as follows: Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 AM to 7 PM; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 AM to 7 PM; Fridays...

I just finished reading James Patterson's new Women's Murder Club novel, "The 23rd Midnight" and it started me thinking about why mysteries are so popular after decades of different authors and titles. The first reason patrons tell me they are such mystery fans is almost all mysteries are series with anywhere from 3 to 40 different books. The familiarity with the settings, characters, and type of mystery gives them comfort that the next book will be like meeting old friends for a new adventure....

With all of the controversy surrounding libraries these days, I thought it would be nice to let everyone know how the Whitehall Community Library serves the public and why. First, our goal is to make lifelong learners of everyone from birth to 140. Reading is a portal into thousands of different stories, no matter if it is for escape, education, entertainment, or just curiosity. Our readers have the option of books on CD, paperbacks, online audio and print books through Montana2Go, hardbacks, graphic novels, board books, and non-fiction referen...

This Friday is PBSKids Storytime with Deanna Mydland, our own special word wizard. She always comes with multiple crafts, stories, games, and other activities for our youngest readers. Storytimes will be at 9:30 AM, 10:30 AM, and 1 PM. We are always excited to see all the great things she has to do. One of the most interesting things about authors is how they can completely change their writing styles and assume other identities when exploring different genres. I was recently told to read the...

She is a quiet, unassuming little elf who spends the year doing amazing things for others. She needs no fancy titles, public recognition, or payment for her quiet service. It all started out when she was caring for a loved one who would not recover. Needing something to pass the time, she began crocheting hats for children. Under her tender care, the yarn became transformed into foxes, giraffes, bears, lions, frogs, and more. Each hat became a mini work of art as the love she shared for others became gifts for those who did not have as much....

The Christmas Festival was a big hit at the Library and we had almost 600 people there celebrating in a variety of ways. I want to take a second and thank the many people who made all the fun happen. First, a big thank you to Deanna Mydland from PBSKids and her helper Katey Crusch for all of the wonderful crafts and projects they provided for the children. Special thanks also to the Friends of the Library who manned the Book Sale, as well as the Winter Wear Give Away and the Cookie Reception tables. This year we were thrilled to have beautiful...
