Dan Brown’s long awaited “Origin” deals with hero Robert Langdon as he discovers the truth behind a scientific discovery that will rock the world forever. “The Last Tudor” by Philippa Gregory delves into the tragic story of Lady Jane Grey, who was Queen of England for only nine days before she was arrested and beheaded. The historical novel is written from Lady Jane’s po...
One of my favorite signs says: “We have summer in Montana, last year it was on Tuesday”. It was just a few weeks ago everyone was melting in 90 degree heat and Tuesday morning I swept snow off of my porch. Now that the weather is changing, it time to curl up by a warm fire with a good book or venture out to try one of the many programs being offered at the Library. There are many new books coming in as well as a plethora of new movie donations. Don’t forget the Friends of the Whitehall Community Library meeting is Thursday, October 5 from... Full story

They are, Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 7 p.m., Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Back by popular demand, we have new magnets coming with the Library hours and phone on them to help everyone remember when the Library is open. Speaking of open or in this case closing, don’t forget that the Library will be closed for Labor Day on September 4th. We will be open on Saturday d... Full story
September is always the time to re-organize the schedule and settle in for winter. Starting September 1st the Library will have new hours per request of our patrons. The new hours reflect not only the busiest times during the week but also the multiple requests the staff has received for opening earlier on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Many of you have told me that you are in town running errands, attending the Farmer’s Market, dropping children off at events but then have to wait several hours for the Library to open. This new s...
Fall is rapidly approaching and things are in full swing at the Library. This fall we will be offering Art Camp for children Kindergarten through 5th grade. Thank you to the Star Theater for the wonderful donation of $400 to the Friends of the Library! I promise we will put the funds to good use on one of the many projects that are still in the planning stage! Summer reading is done for the year. It was great to watch 148 readers log 100,130 minutes for the eight weeks. Patrons from toddlers to seniors read their favorite books, magazines, and electronic readers to earn three levels of prizes. Great job to all! As the staff begins to move toward fall (yes already!), computer classes are open for...
This week is the last week of our summer programming. We finished summer reading with a “Build Your Own Sundae” and final store. It was a great program and we had almost 140 readers. Huge thanks to everyone who made it possible. This Saturday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. the Library will host a Cowboy Craft time. All kits will be provided and children 3-5th grade are welcome. The History Book Club will meet on Monday, July 31st at 6:30 p.m. to discuss this month’s selection “War and Remembrance”. It’s a mystery or should I say Mystery Book Club. This Tuesday the mystery fans will be meeting on Tuesday, July 11 at 3:30 p.m. in the basement of the Library. The group is open to anyone who enjoys a good who-done-it and wants to share what they are currently reading with everyone else. The group discusses new mystery releases, favorite authors, types of mysteries, and how characters or authors relate to their audience. I can’t believe there are only three weeks left of summer reading. Our final party will be on July 26 at 10:30 a.m. Readers...
I can’t believe the Summer Reading program is half over this week. With the weeks flying by, I want to remind everyone that the Library will be closed on Tuesday, July 4th so the staff may celebrate with their families. The Library will be open regular hours the rest of the week and all regular programs will be held at normal times. We had quite the crew in the Library a few days ago when the Rotary Club decided to hold a volunteer night at the Library. They tidied shelves, cut out name tags for programs, put DVD’s and books away, made sig...
Everyone saw the wonderful picture of the Rotary Club presenting a check to the Library last week. I thought I would translate what that donation, the funding from the Friends of the Library, funding from the Whitehall School District summer program, and the $250 donation from the Black Tie Blue Jean organization will mean to the children, teens, and adults of the Whitehall/Cardwell area. The cost of the summer reading program includes craft supplies, programming fees, prizes, snacks, publicity, manuals, extra staffing, and planning hours....
Summer Reading is off to a great start and this week even more exciting programs are in store for our readers. Monday the Countdown to Kindergarteners will be exploring letters and the alphabet. The Library will be closed for Memorial Day on Monday May 29. In response to the young patron who asked me why we were closed on that day, here is the answer. Memorial Day came out of the horrific casualties the United States suffered on both sides during the Civil War. On May 5, 1868, General John Logan, a Union general, declared there would be a yearly observance to honor those who had died in the Civil War. The day was originally entitled Decoration Day and only celebrated in the northern states. The Southern states kept their own form of...

If you would like more information about the Friends please call the Library at 287-3763 or drop by the circulation desk. When Hastings closed in Missoula they donated their extra DVDs and CD books on tape to the Missoula Public Library. Their staff generously shared...
By the time you read this I will be almost done with a week at the Montana Library Association (MLA) annual meeting in Billings. MLA provides a myriad of training in all types of areas and relevant issues relating to library funding, new laws, the latest technology, and more. It is also a chance for libraries to network together with new ideas and share programming that has worked well in their communities or maybe not worked so well. It is a mix of academic librarians, school librarians, specialty librarians, and of course, public librarians w...

This is part of a series of books covering the great cities of Europe by Rutherfurd. If you would like to join us f...
I just returned from the Broad Valleys Federation meeting and thought I would share a little information about this wonderful organization. There are six different federations in Montana, which are divided into different geographical regions. The Broad Valleys Federation has 21 member libraries and stretches from Helena to Dillon. It includes large libraries such as Bozeman Public, medium libraries such as Whitehall, and smaller libraries. Some of the members are libraries which are a combination of a school and community library, such as the...
