The Whitehall Community Library has been awarded a Teen Project Democracy grant of $5000. Whitehall, along with the public libraries in Missoula and Billings, are the three sites chosen for this year’s projects centered around Holocaust study. The project will be teen-led and is open to youth 14-17 years of age. The Whitehall Community Library invites Whitehall School District students to participate from September 2021 to May 2022 in this leadership opportunity. This has been such a week of giving to the Whitehall Community Library! It started out with Roger Steerman and Jarrin Cheuvront framing the outside space for our new bench. Then 4 Rivers Concrete Products donated the concrete and delivered it last Friday. We had quite the work crew as they smoothed the surface in preparation for the bench and set up protective fencing for it to dry. We will have the incredible Kyle here for our annual summer reading magic show on July 21 at 10:30 p.m. Do not forget to bring your reading logs to turn in for prizes! Summer is tough time for young mothers to get a little time off and good babysitters are always in demand. If you have a young person interested in getting into the babysitting business, the Extension Office will be teaching a four week Babysitting clinic on Tuesday afternoon, starting July 6th through July 27th at 1:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome, but registration is required in order for there to be enough handouts and supplies for everyone. I love preschoolers, they get right to the point! Last week we had PBS here for a special program and their media person came along to do an on-camera interview about the library and its partnership with PBSKids. One of my favorite tiny humans asked me why they were here and when I told him, he asked me what I did all day to rate such an interview. As the temperatures rise this summer, I want to thank the Friends of the Library for providing our second air conditioner. It has been so much fun watching everyone come in to sign up for Summer Reading this week. Registration is open and the programs begin on June 7th. Reading in the summer may have a huge effect on the “summer slide” where children fall behind on the skills they have practiced during the winter months. There are many fascinating studies on the slide, which causes some students to fall behind several months by the fall. We have begun the countdown to Summer Reading! The program begins June 7th and continues until July 31st. It is for all ages and there are prizes, special programs, new books to read, and more. The theme this year is “Tails and Tales” so there will be lots of outdoor themed programming for all ages. One of the signs of spring is when our Tuesday night Watercolor Class turns from an actual class to free painting. The Library provides the paper, watercolors, brushes, and other supplies but the class is open to everyone as a free paint. This week the Government 101 program will explore the differences and responsibilities of the Jefferson County Library Board and the Friends of the Whitehall Community Library Steering Committee. After a year of wearing masks, it is time to come celebrate the unmasking of Jefferson County! This year Black Tie & Blue Jeans is celebrating with a "Masquerade Ball" on Saturday, May 15, 2021, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Copper K Barn. This historic building was constructed in the late 1800's by the Parrot Silver and Copper Mining Company so there will be plenty of room for all. I had some fantastic news this week! The Whitehall Community Library has been chosen as one of five libraries to participate in the Entrepreneurial Support in the Library Small Cohort! This means that the Library will become a resource center for area businesses as well as those who are thinking about beginning a business of their own. I hope you all had a happy holiday weekend. The Library was able to make Easter a little brighter thanks to the Love, INC. organizations in Dillon and Whitehall. They provided 50 Easter baskets for the Library to pass out to children and their parents last week. Candy, games, toys, and more awaited the little ones during story time and after school. Spring is a great time to update and give the Library a new look. The Friends are holding a new logo contest for the Library and offering a $100 first prize. Our Flower Pressing and craft workshops with Emily Dickerson will start March 20th. The adult workshop will be at 9:30 a.m. and the children’s craft class with flowers will be at 11:00 a.m. All materials will be provided so we ask that you call in to reserve your spot.
