    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Sep 6, 2017

After two dominating wins to open the season, it was more of the same for the Whitehall/Harrison High School football in their conference opener Friday night at Trojans Field. Whitehall used a well-balanced offense and smothering defense to improve to 3-0 on the season with a 41-7 win over visiting Red Lodge. Following the game Friday, head coach Dan Lacey lauded his defensive unit that has allowed just two touchdowns in 12 quarters this season. “They are doing a great job. We are getting a r...

  • Editorial: Be careful around schools

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Sep 6, 2017

Every weekday while I’m at the office, my desk will shake because a semi truck is going too fast down Legion Avenue. I certainly understand the importance of transportation by truck, and that the main street of town is on a highway, but that doesn’t mean they cannot abide by the same rules as everyone else. I welcome anyone who thinks that I might be exaggerating to come sit and my desk for about 15 minutes and try to type or read the screen while my entire desk shakes. There is no reason to be going that fast through a town, especially a loc...

  • Column: Labor Day

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Sep 6, 2017

I think it would be pretty safe to say I had a memorable Labor Day weekend. I’m usually not one to travel over a holiday weekend, but when I saw that Guns and Roses was playing last Sunday at the Gorge Amphitheater in Washington, there was no doubt in my mind that I had to go. I was planning on possibly leaving Saturday morning and making about a six-hour drive to meet some of my friends from Seattle at Blue Lake. I was going to attend the Whitehall football game on Friday and come back and write the story as well as getting a few more t...

  • Trojans learn a lot in first conference game

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Sep 6, 2017

While the Whitehall High School varsity volleyball team may have dropped their home opener 25-9, 25-13, 25-23 last Thursday to visiting Townsend, head coach Laura McDonald was pleased with the performance of her young team. "The scores for the first two games didn't even come close to showing how well the girls played. The mistakes and points lost were kind of weird. They pulled themselves together for the third game and it was exciting to watch," she said. Junior Dorothy Mastel had a huge...

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Aug 30, 2017

Local law enforcement, residents, as well as town and county officials came together last Wednesday night at a special town meeting in Whitehall. A majority of the meeting was a public forum to allow residents to express their concerns and ask questions to law enforcement, including Jefferson County Sheriff Craig Doolittle. Many in the audience spoke about problems associated with meth use. Curtis Smith said that while living in Arkansas and now Whitehall, he has seen a lot of meth problems and if they can get rid of the drug, they could get...

  • Editorial: Thanks for all you do law enforcement

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Aug 30, 2017

A few weeks ago, I wrote an editorial about commending the Whitehall Chamber for their decision to select the local volunteer fire department as the Grand Marshal of the 2017 Frontier Days parade. This noble gesture said so much about the community and how residents feel about those who risk their lives for the betterment of society. They should also receive a huge thank you for working their tails off on the Conrow Fire. There was also an amazing gesture made by local residents last week when a “Back the Blue” event took place in downtown Whi...

  • Column: Video Store

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Aug 30, 2017

When I was growing up I used to relish Friday evening. My family would make our way to Warehouse Video and rent several movies for the weekend. I can still remember the smell of fresh popcorn they would always give to each customer, and the owner Matt who always had on an impeccable vest and smelled of the bar across the street. I could spend hours trying to find the right movie. I would from time to time go the local Blockbuster or Hastings, but there was something special about that little store and how they would always reserve a movie for...

Area residents came together last week to show support for local law enforcement at a "Back the Blue" event at Legion Park in Downtown Whitehall. Among those in attendance at the Wednesday event was Charles Shank, who discussed his respect for and what the local law enforcement means to him. He said some laws really need to be enforced because certain elements of society don't seem to care about others. Whitehall resident Jeannie Reinschmidt said she left the event very happy and pleased with...

Head Coach Dan Lacey said the coaching staff and players have been talking about Johnson having a breakout play in a game and he did not disappoint just seconds into the game. "We've...

  • Lady Trojans defeat Livingston

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Aug 30, 2017

There were plenty of positives for the Whitehall High School volleyball last Saturday in Manhattan. The Lady Trojans were not only able to pick up a victory against Livingston, the young team was also able to gain valuable experience on the court. Head Coach Lauren McDonald said the team has 14 girls out for the team, but only 12 had enough practices so they were not able to sub for their varsity or junior varsity teams. She said it was daunting when they first arrived to see teams with around...

The Whitehall Council approved a request for the electrical work at a meeting July 16. • Editorial --- Friday Night Lights: Get out and support Trojans

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Aug 23, 2017

“There is nowhere better to be on a Friday night than a high school football game.” – Mark Correll Late last year, the Whitehall High School football team was on a tear as they made their way to the Montana Class B Semifinals before losing to eventual state champion Eureka. There were plenty of wins and celebration, but this was much more than just a game. It was a community coming together to support a group of kids who gave everything they had every snap of every game. Everyone in Whitehall was abuzz as the Trojans started the season winni...

  • Column: Mystic Mac

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Aug 23, 2017

I’m under the firm belief that there can never be too many articles about football in not only the Whitehall Ledger, but any other publication. If there was an article about the 3-4 defense in Cosmopolitan, you better bet I’d read it. However since there are already four articles about football in this issue, I best not get too crazy and write this column about the ole pigskin. I also have probably written too much about my cats lately, so I best change things up for my weekly column. This weekend millions of people across the country will be...
