    Just minutes before a special screening last Friday night at the Star Theater of the "Ballad of Lefty Brown", the films star Bill Pullman said it was going to be an exciting night.     There will not be a winter gun show next month in Whitehall. According to event organizer Tom Harrington, the annual Winter Blast Gun Show sponsored by the Whitehall VFW and American Legion Post, and the Weapons Collectors Society of Montana has been cancelled. Harrington said the popular annual show would not take place due to insurance related issues. The popular bi-annual event brings in vendors from across Southwest Montana.   • Fire department receives donation

    A generous donation from the Ladies of the Country Store will greatly assist a planned renovation at the Whitehall Fire Hall. According to Joe Granvold of the Whitehall Volunteer Fire Department, the Ladies Auxiliary made an $18,000 donation at a town council meeting earlier this month. The department will also be using $10,000 from the annual Frontier Days fundraiser for the estimated $28,000 project that includes extensive renovations in the conference room.     After four tough road battles, the Whitehall High School girls basketball team is returning to Varsity Gym for a Thursday night battle against Manhattan.     A resolution to terminate the buy/sell agreement for the purchase of the Whitehall Ambulance Barn was voted down at a Town Council meeting last week. Resolution 2018-1, which would have terminated the buy/sell agreement with Cory Tebay of Western Veterinary Services for the building located at 207 E. Legion, failed by a 2-3 vote.     A recent announcement from Governor Steve Bullock had some positive news for Jefferson County. Three county organizations were among the recipients of $750,000 in grants to develop and enhance tourism and recreation in 27 Montana communities across the state. The grant funds will support $1.8 million of investments into infrastructure and marketing projects. Jefferson County received $14,984 to create a website to promote tourism and recreation.     The Whitehall Chamber of Commerce recently received huge news when they were informed of a grant from the state of Montana. The chamber will receive a $5,720.50 grant from the Office of Tourism and Business Development.     Despite being shorthanded, the Whitehall High School wrestling team was still able to put up a strong showing at last week's Class B/C Duals at Great Falls Central.     There was good news to end 2017 at the Barrick Golden Sunlight Mine in Whitehall. At the Community Transition Advisory Committee last week, Mine Environmental Superintendent Chuck Buus said the state has accepted their application for the proposed Apex Project, and the next step would be for Tetra Tech of Missoula to complete an Environmental Assessment.     With attendance numbers increasing at the two Whitehall secondary schools, officials are looking into the possibility of eight period days. In her monthly report, Principal Hannah Nieskens reported increases at both the high school and middle school. Nieskens said there were two new students at the high school for a total of 141.
