    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 26, 2018

To say last Friday's Whitehall/Harrison High School football teams win over Three Forks was exciting would be an understatement. Trailing 22-14 late in the fourth quarter, the Trojans were able to cut the lead to two on a five-yard Connor Johnson to Cade Briggs touchdown with 58 seconds left in the game. Johnson would then connect with freshman Brendan Wagner on a the two-point conversion to tie the game that would eventually end up in overtime. The dramatics would continue with Whitehall scorin... Full story

  • Fall Festival Saturday in Whitehall

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 26, 2018

Ann Palmer can remember several years ago when the Whitehall area community would come together on an annual basis to celebrate a large fall festival. This weekend a similar event will return to Whitehall with Saturday’s Homegrown 406 Fall Festival. Palmer who is helping to organize the September 21 event, also helped out with the prior fall festival. She said while the new festival is smaller than ones in the past, it will be a fun time with a lot planned throughout the day. The Homegrown 406 Fall Festival is sponsored by the Whitehall Open A...

  • Column: Chavez Ravine

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 26, 2018

I watched a lot of baseball growing up. In fact many of my favorites summer memories were watching the Atlanta Braves play on TBS, followed by night games outside with kids in my neighborhood. At the time and for a reason why I to this day can’t understand, the southern based team was in the National League West with teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, and San Francisco Giants. The Dodgers games would always stand out to me more than the other division rivals, especially because I used to giggle that they would have a man s... Full story

A new committee of Whitehall residents and business owners will soon be working together to address weed problems within town limits. The Whitehall Town Council voted unanimously last week to begin working on a resolution that would create a "adopt an alley" program. "If we could get the weeds under control it would improve the looks of town considerably," said Mayor Mary Janacaro Hensleigh. Council member Montina Rawson said the weed issue should not just be up to Public Works to take care of....

  • Column: The Camera

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 19, 2018

I’ve always found it interesting how different people deal with the same situation. A few weeks ago, I was sitting at the office and Melissa returned volleyball game visibly upset. Somehow during the time she had left the office and went to the game, a very important piece on the inside of the camera had come loose and it could not be used. She was really upset because she knew just how important a camera is to a newspaper. To put together a paper there has to be a really good camera, that is just the way it goes. Cell phones companies are m...

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 12, 2018

I was always lucky on the first day of school because it was impossible to botch the pronunciation of my name during roll call. This however is not the case for some people I've known. Although I'm completely fine with my name and who I'm named after, I did used to dream about what it would be like to have an exotic name. Going to school put those daydreams out of my head in a heartbeat. I had a bad enough time with the "Jack" jokes that would never stop. By the time I was 15, I thought there...

  • Lady Trojans finish strong in home opener

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 12, 2018

There is no quit in the Whitehall High School volleyball team. After losing two tough sets to start their home opener 25-15, 25-12 to Manhattan, the Lady Trojans came back strong in the third. While they ended up coming short 25-21, head coach Sage Hengst though the third set was great for the team. "We showed Manhattan we can play at their level. We had some great vollies in the first two matches but it just wasn't enough momentum to keep us up with Manhattan's constant hard hits," she said....

  • Art displayed at town hall

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 5, 2018

  • COLUMN: Twin?

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Sep 5, 2018

While I'm sure some people toss and turn and night worrying about politics, solving world hunger and other important issues, I on the other hand find myself up at 2 a.m. thinking about some of the dumbest things imaginable. One that has been driving me crazy as of late has to do with a town a little over 20 miles from Whitehall. I can't for the life of me understand why almost everybody I talk to refer to Twin Bridges as just "Twin". I have not ever heard anyone say we are going to go watch the...

  • Trojans looking to earn their paycheck

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 5, 2018

While the first two games of the season did not go as planned, there is still plenty of fight left in the Whitehall/Harrison High School football team. The Trojans will look to pick of their first win of the season Friday night when they travel to battle Shepherd, a team they played twice during the 2017 season. Both teams will come into the game coming off losses, Whitehall (0-2) lost their home opener last Friday 36-12 to Missoula Loyola, while Shepherd (1-1) lost 35-24 on the road against...

Knowing they could be needed at anytime in any weather condition, continual training is vital for members of the local Jefferson Valley Search and Rescue. Earlier this month, four members of the organization headed to the Indiana University Geological Station in Cardwell to take part in a 24-hour sanctioned Joel Hardin Professional Tracking Services class. Jefferson Valley...

  • Column: Adulting

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Aug 29, 2018

I’m proud to say I’m a huge fan of the schools in Whitehall. I think the teachers, staff, administration and board work together in unison to create something special. I’m also very high on the district where I grew up in Wyoming and although it is much larger, they do an outstanding job. While very appreciative of everyone involved in making schools in this country great, I do however wish there would be more life skills available for students. Whitehall High School does a far better job than my alma mater, but I still think this is somet...

After a tough start to the 2018 season, the Whitehall/Harrison High School football team will look to bounce back when they host Missoula Loyola Friday night. The Trojans fell 34-0 last Saturday to Colstrip, a game that was added to the schedule late last week and took place at Rocky Mountain College in Billings. The Colts were originally scheduled to play Wolf Point, who cancelled the game. Colstrip officials contacted Whitehall head coach and athletic director Dan Lacey about the possibility...

  • Nice start for Lady Trojans

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Aug 29, 2018

It was a positive start to the season for the Whitehall High School volleyball team. The Lady Trojans finished second out of four teams at last Saturday's Manhattan Quad Tournament. First-year head coach Sage Hengst said she saw a lot of potential from the girls, as well as some great vollies. "I was really happy to see it come together finally," she said. Playing for the first time in 2018, Hengst said the team started out nervous, quiet, and playing it safe. "But by the end of the tourney...

  • Great turnout at Jefferson County Fair

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Aug 29, 2018

Jefferson County Fair Board members are very pleased with last week's event. "It was a banner year for the number of people who attended the fair and rodeo on Saturday. We lucked out on the weather...the smoke cleared for Saturday and there was a nice cooling trend Sunday," said member Terry Minow. Among the highlights listed by Minow was the attendance and reaction to Fun Pianos, a Thursday night fundraiser for the carousel. "There was lots of audience participation...people are still talking...

  • Trojans open season in Boulder

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Aug 29, 2018

A tough season opening course did not deter the Whitehall Cross Country team from some positive times at last week's Jefferson Invite in Boulder. Leading the way for the Trojans was junior Madison Loomis who finished the race in fifth place with a time of 23:38. Following the race, Whitehall head coach Kerry Sacry lauded the performance of Loomis on a course he said featured a tough hill at the start of the 3-mile race. Freshman Brynna Wolfe had a solid start to her high school career finishing...
