  • COLUMN: Falling For Fall

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 18, 2019

Fall has arrived in Southwest Montana and I must say it is easily my favorite season the year. I love to leave the house for work on a crisp morning and see the temperature slowly rise to a comfortable high later in the day. To me there is just something special about the colors of fall and it also means the start of football season which also gets me fairly excited unless I have to try and take pictures again in a driving rain storm which was a nightmare. I still don't think my camera is dry. H...

  • COLUMN: Your 3 day weekend is not my cup of tea

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 11, 2019

As long as I can remember, Labor Day has always been the symbolic end of the summer and an opportunity for people to get as much enjoyment as possible out of a three-day weekend. There is also a great deal of history behind the holiday and it also serves as a great reminder of the labor movements that helped shape the history of this country as well as those who continue to fight for the rights of workers today. While many people were camping, out at the lake, or having a barbecue with family...

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 11, 2019

The Whitehall High School volleyball team bounced back from a conference opening home loss against Townsend Thursday with a four-set victory on the road Saturday in Big Timber. The Lady Trojans picked up the victory with a 25-20, 20-25, 25-23 and 25-19 win over the Lady Herders. "It was so great. The girls worked their tails off and never gave up, even when we were down in the third game. I'm so proud of them. This group really has a lot of heart, a lot of fire, and a desire to win," said head...

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 11, 2019

In the week leading up to Whitehall/Harrison High School's home opener last Friday against Shepherd, head coach Dan Lacey talked to his team about playing with effort energy. The message was well received with the Trojans who shined in all areas of the game and improved to 2-0 with a 19-8 victory over the Mustangs in a game that was delayed nearly 40 minutes due to lightning. "I could not be any prouder of the way they played in all three phases of the game. We had a lull last week in special...

In late July, Whitehall siblings Dawson and BreeAnne Lanes made the cross-country trip to Orlando for the 2019 Assemblies of God Youth Ministries National Fine Arts Festival. To say they did a great job representing Whitehall would be an understatement. Dawson finished second nationally in the "Rap" category, and BreeAnne finished second in the "Book Chapter" competition. • COLUMN: The Rotary Phone

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 4, 2019

I'll be the first to admit I spend too much time on my phone and really need to put it down a lot more. It's very addictive and I can certainly see why kids who have been raised with phones spend so much time with them. It's all they know. I'm old enough to remember using a rotary phone so I should know better than to spend hours with my eyes focused on a tiny screen, especially after looking at a computer screen most of the day. I really wish the younger generation could have experienced the...

  • Trojans open season with road win

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 4, 2019

Sparked by incredible play on defense, the Trojans picked up their first win of the season last Friday with an impressive 12-7 road win over Cut Bank. Whitehall head coach Dan Lacey said it was a great feeling returning to Cut Bank for the first time since a 2016 playoff victory and grinding out a win in a tough environment. • COLUMN: Strange things happened after New Coke

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Aug 28, 2019

A few years back when video stores were still a mainstay, I used to rent five or six movies a week. Sometimes when the weather was bad, or I was in a lazy mood I would spend my entire weekend watching a variety of films in a variety of genres. These days I still watch a movie here and there but I'm no longer a movie buff who could tell you the director of each film I'm watching as well as other movies they've directed. These days I've found the joy of binge watching a television show and it is...

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Aug 28, 2019

At the start of each season, Whitehall High School head football coach Dan Lacey discusses with his team the little differences between good teams and great ones. Two weeks into fall camp, he is optimistic about what he sees from the team who will open their season August 30 on the road against Cut Bank. "To be a great team you have to have discipline, team chemistry, and a positive culture in which you enjoy being a part of. If we can simulate practice effort and energy to game situation, we...

A young and talented Whitehall High School volleyball team will open the season this Saturday at the Manhattan Quad Tournament. Head coach Kayla Simon is excited to get the season rolling. The 2019 Montana Shakespeare in the Park performance is scheduled for Thursday, August 29 at 6 p.m. at the Whitehall baseball fields. • COLUMN: First Day...

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Aug 21, 2019

With the start of the school year approaching I started to rack my brain about some first day memories but there was not really anything that stood out. I think perhaps the biggest moment I remember is how my love for the first day changed as I aged. When I was a younger kid, I could not wait to get out the door. Counting down the days till I could see my friends and catch up at recess was an exciting time. This would change abruptly once I reached junior high. Instead of counting down the days...

  • COLUMN: The Sump

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Aug 14, 2019

With the heavy moisture early in the summer I really haven't had to worry too much about watering my grass. While it certainly hasn't needed much additional water, it sure has not had any problems growing. In fact, my lawn has probably grown a half inch since I left the house thing morning. I certainly have no issue with mowing the lawn, it's some nice exercise outside, but my mower broke so I have somebody come out every two weeks to take care of the grass. I should probably buy a new one, but...

  • Column: A new shirt

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Aug 7, 2019

A few years ago, I was covering a Class B State Track meet in Butte and it was a typical Montana spring day that featured just about all four seasons. When I left the house in the morning it was frigid and appeared it might snow at any minute. This really isn't unusual so despite the fact it was near the end of May I put on a heavy sweatshirt and beanie and made the trip over Homestake Pass. Shortly after arriving the weather slowly started to improve and by noon it felt like this was a...

  • Amazing season for Gallatin Valley Outlaws

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Aug 7, 2019

A magical season came to an end last Wednesday for the Gallatin Valley Outlaws. The Outlaws finished their season with a heartbreaking 15-14 loss to host the Bitterroot Red Sox at the Montana/Alberta American Legion Class A State Tournament in Florence. A win by Gallatin Valley would have sent them into the championship game against eventual winner Vauxhall (Canada). The squad who plays their home games in Three Forks finished the season with a 42-16 record and won the district tournament in...

  • Sullivan reflects on time in Whitehall

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Jul 31, 2019

Just two days prior to his retirement, Whitehall Schools Superintendent John Sullivan spent his time Monday helping to paint the old and worn concession stand on campus. His last few moments in the position were indicative of his five-year tenure and a profound attitude to leave the district better then he found it. "I have said this many times; no one person is bigger than the whole, or bigger than the job. Just because I was the superintendent didn't mean I couldn't mow the grass, shovel the snow, or sweep the gym floor. I hope I have set an...
