  • Editorial: Shopping local important year round

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Sep 21, 2016

Whether it is in Whitehall, or some of our neighbors like Boulder or Twin Bridges, small businesses play an important role in the local economy. It only takes a few minutes of driving around in Whitehall to see it is a town full of a variety of small businesses, all of which offer something of value to local residents. The businesses are not only located in downtown, there are also many smaller businesses throughout Jefferson County. Every year around Christmas time there is a push nationwide to remind people to shop local during the holiday...

  • Column: On the Roof

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Sep 21, 2016

There is an infamous scene from the television show "Breaking Bad" where the main character tosses a pizza on the roof of his home in a fit of rage. As bizarre as that may sound, it seemed completely normal to me. While it wasn't a pizza, I had once done the same thing, and at the time it seemed quite appropriate. To preface the story, I have four sisters and am closer with my sisters Jenny and Megan. I am ten years older than Megan, and would often times have to watch her during the summer...

  • Trojans whip Wardens, Boulder next

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Sep 21, 2016

You couldn't have scripted a better start to the game last Friday night for the Whitehall/Harrison High School football team. The Trojans (4-0) scored on long touchdown strikes from Braden Larsen to Wyatt Alexander on both their second and third plays from scrimmage, and never looked back in a 32-6 homecoming win over Powell County High School (Deer Lodge). After receiving the opening kickoff, Larsen found an open Alexander on the second play of the game for a 51-yard touchdown. After stopping...

Going into Friday night's game at Jefferson County High School in Boulder, the senior class members of the Whitehall/Harrison High School football team had yet to pick up a varsity win over their archrival. • Vandals strike at Fish Pond

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Sep 14, 2016

Over the years members of the Whitehall Rotary Club have worked countless hours making the Fish Pond on Legion Avenue a beautiful setting for both locals and visitors. Earlier this month, a person or persons had complete disregard for the clubs efforts. According to Whitehall Rotary Club President Ed Handl, the fish food dispenser that had been placed at the pond was vandalized sometime between September 2 and September 5. Handl said the dispenser that had been mounted on a steal platform, had...

  • Production near target at Golden Sunlight

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Sep 14, 2016

Despite the mill-run being cut short two days, August production at the Barrick Golden Sunlight Mine was nearly on target. At the Community Transition Advisory Committee meeting last week, Mine Manager Dan Banghart said the production in August was 3,243 ounces, just below the target of 3,299 ounces. Banghart told committee members that ¼ of the production for August has been pushed into September, and they are looking for it to be one of their better months of production for the underground. The August 24 auction at the mine was reported as a...

  • Editorial: Proud to wear the purple and gold

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Sep 14, 2016

I had the opportunity last week to attend the Jefferson Valley Community Foundation Grantee Tour and much like last year walked away impressed with all the local organization does for this community. One of the stops on the tour was at Whitehall High School, who was the recipient of a grant that was used for the Shakespeare in the Schools program. As is the case most times I walk into the building, I witnessed a bunch of students wearing Whitehall Trojans apparel. I can say the same thing happens on a visit to the elementary or middle schools....

  • Column: Connected to a Wall

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Sep 14, 2016

I've tried multiple times to erase the memories of my junior high school pictures. No matter how hard I try, nothing can be done to remove the images of just how stupid I looked. In one, I had a ridiculous mullet. It wasn't just the run-of-the-mill Billy Ray Cyrus "Achy Breaky Heart", or a hockey mullet, I had my hair feathered on the top and permed in the back. It was just awful. As bad as that hairdo was, it might have been worse the year before when I had some sort of weird Vanilla Ice steps...

  • Trojans win Thriller

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Sep 14, 2016

It wasn't easy, by no means was pretty, but the Whitehall/Harrison High School football team displayed the heart of champion and dug deep to get their third consecutive win to start the season Friday night at Mitchell Stadium in Anaconda. After not giving up a point in their first two games of the season, the Trojans (3-0) would find themselves behind 27-21 at halftime. The defense quickly recovered and was able to pitch a shutout in the second half of the thrilling 28-27 victory over the...

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Sep 14, 2016

The Jefferson Valley Community Foundation strives on connecting people who care to causes that matter. Since 2002, the JVCF has awarded 80 grants to 35 organizations with a total surpassing $94,000. Last week, members of the JVCF Board were able to both hear and see how the grants had been used to benefit the community at a 2015 grantees tour. Last year the foundation awarded the Friends of the Whitehall Library $2,600 to purchased early learning AWE software. Whitehall Librarian Jeannie...

  • Whitehall hosts two-day rodeo

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Sep 7, 2016

Year in and out, local junior high and high school rodeo competitors and their families make numerous trips across the state. This weekend they won’t have to travel and get the chance to compete in front of a home crowd at the annual Whitehall High School and Junior High Rodeo. The event is scheduled to take place Saturday, September 10 beginning at 10 a.m., and Sunday, September 11 at 9 a.m. Rodeo organizer Lonna Johnson said putting together the tournament is a lot of work, but it will be nice for the kids to compete at home, and hopefully t...

  • Editorial: Another great event coming to Whitehall

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Sep 7, 2016

Last Saturday I had the chance to attend the cross-country meet hosted by Whitehall High School. I was really impressed with how many people turned out for the event. There were a lot of local residents who showed up to cheer on the Trojans middle school and high school teams. The Whitehall High School cheerleaders also showed up to the event and cheered on not only their classmates, but everyone who participated. That was a job well done by the cheer squad. It was a well-run meet and great job done by all the students, staff, and volunteers...

  • Column: Days, weeks, and months

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Sep 7, 2016

The start of the school year is an exciting time. There is something special in the air on the first day as kids make their way into a new classroom ready to meet their new teacher, see old friends, and make new ones. I’m sure not all of the kids really want to get back into the routine, but they settle in once they get into the classroom and the first week goes by. As a parent, it is also an exciting time to get the kids back into a routine and out of the house. The summer most likely goes by a bit too fast for kids, but for parents it seems t...

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Sep 7, 2016

With eight quarters of action in the books for the 2016 season, the Whitehall/Harrison High School football team has yet to give up a point. They have scored 87.
