The Trojans (11-1, 6-0 5B) held the rival Panthers to six or less points in three quarters, including giving up just two points in the first period of the 62-24 victory. The game could not have been more different than the first matchup between the two teams last week, a 51-47 Whitehall victory last Tuesday...

  • Editorial: Lady Trojans show plenty of promise

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 11, 2017

It would be safe to say the past few years have been difficult for the Whitehall High School girl's basketball team. As soon as the team took to the court to open the 2016-17 season, this changed in a heartbeat. The Lady Trojans were able to open the season with three consecutive victories, already matching their win total for the previous two seasons combined. They dropped their next two games, but showed last Thursday that the culture of Whitehall girl's basketball had changed. They shook off...

  • Column: STOP THE PRESS!!

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 11, 2017

When I first started out as a reporter I always had the dream of frantically running into the printing facility and screaming, "Stop the press". I had seen this in multiple movies and television shows and it always seemed so dramatic. A few years later I would get the chance after a major error was discovered. Turns out it was not as exciting as I had pictured it. In fact, I think I just made the press crew mad and got called about every name in the book. I think half of it was the fact I came...

  • Whitehall splits Tuesday with rival Jefferson

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 11, 2017

The Whitehall High School boy’s basketball held off a scrappy Jefferson High School team in rivalry action last night in Boulder. Playing without senior leader Colton Noyes who missed the game due to sickness, the Trojans (5-1, 3-0 5B) overcame a late deficit for the 51-47 victory. Trailing by one with under a minute left, senior Braden Larsen hit a layup to put the Trojans up 48-47. It was their first score since a 9-0 run that had given Boulder their first lead of the second half. After two misses by the Panthers, Andrew Simon drilled two f...

  • Trojans topple Tigers

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 11, 2017

The Whitehall High School boy's basketball stayed undefeated at home with a 70-53 win last Thursday over Manhattan. The Trojans jumped out to a 20-12 lead in a first quarter that saw freshman Max Feight drain three three-point shots. Head Coach Zach McLean thought his team did a better job to start the game which has been a concern, but said he was still disappointed the team gave up a lot of good early looks on the perimeter. Both teams would score 12 points in the second quarter to keep the...

  • Trojans battle the best in Bozeman

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 11, 2017

The Whitehall High School wrestling team was able face off against some of the best teams in the state at last week's Tom LeProwse Tournament in Bozeman. "The boys did well. It is the biggest, toughest tournament we will go to this year," coach Steve Sacry said. Leading the way for Whitehall was junior Dawson Hoerauf, who finished fifth at the tournament that Sacry said featured mostly Class AA and A Schools. Hoerauf continued his strong season with a 5-2 record. Sacry said sophomore Connor...

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 11, 2017

After opening the season with three consecutive wins, the Whitehall High School girl's basketball team hit a rough patch with back-to-back losses against Three Forks and Twin Bridges. The team responded in impressive fashion last Thursday night with an impressive 57-29 home league win over Manhattan. "The Lady Trojans came back and played really hard against Manhattan, which is a characteristic of these Lady Trojans. Knock them down and they will get up," head coach Herman Gerving said. The...

  • Teen gives back

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 4, 2017

While many kids his age are hoping for video games or a new cell phone for their birthday, this wasn't the case for 13-year-old Kaden Weber. The seventh grade student at Whitehall Middle School instead asked for something much more valuable that in turn showed the true spirit of giving. Rather than wanting presents on his December 31st birthday, Kaden asked friends and family members for money which he is donating to Reed's Rescue and Rehabilitation, a local non-profit animal service. Kaden...

  • Sheriff Doolittle: Lock your vehicles

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 4, 2017

With the recent temperatures dropping well be-low zero, local residents may have been letting their vehicles warm up unattended for a few minutes before leaving home. Jefferson County Sheriff Craig Doolittle said Tuesday that while this might have been something local residents could have done in the past, they should not do it anymore. Doolittle said there have been two recent auto thefts in the Town of Whitehall, and stressed the importance of locking vehicles. He said during this time of year they will sometimes leave Sheriff's Department...

  • Editorial: Plenty to be thankful for in 2016

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 4, 2017

Last Sunday marked the first day of 2017. While I most certainly don’t have a crystal ball that will allow me to see what will happen in the New Year, I’m sure there will be plenty of great stories to tell in the Ledger courtesy of the great people of Whitehall and the surrounding areas. Looking back at 2016, I had plenty to be thankful for as the Publisher of the Whitehall Ledger. I’d like to share some of the things I’m most thankful for. It would be impossible to get everyone I’d like to into this editorial, but these are some of the thing...

  • Column: Let Harvard Fix It

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 4, 2017

A few minutes ago I was busy getting the web site ready to publish and my cell phone started going bezerk. I didn't recognize the number, so I just turned the ringer off and went back to the task at hand. This didn't stop the caller. Over and over again someone was trying to reach me from Cambridge, MA. I don't know much about Cambridge, other than it is the home of Harvard University, and I seriously doubt someone was calling to ask my advice on scholarly matters. I figured if it was important,...

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 4, 2017

The Whitehall High School boy's basketball team shook off a slow start on their way to a 66-53 home victory Tuesday night over visiting Twin Bridges. After trailing at the end of the first quarter, Whitehall (4-1, 1-0 5B) was able to gain a sizeable lead in the second quarter on their way to the home win. Head Coach Zach McLean said with the exception of a win over Three Forks, his team has gotten off to slow starts and not come out ready to play. He said on Tuesday that they did not come out...

  • Lady Trojans fall to Twin Bridges

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 4, 2017

The Whitehall High School girl's basketball team started strong, but was unable to hold off a talented Twin Bridges team in a 56-33 loss Tuesday night in Varsity Gym. The Lady Trojans led by as many as seven early in the second quarter, but a hot shooting Lady Falcons team dominated the final three quarters on their way to the convincing victory. Whitehall head coach Herman Gerving said the team started off well especially on defense, but they started to make some mistakes with the ball and Twin...

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Dec 28, 2016

Whitehall High School's Andrew Simon and Braden Larsen showed throughout the 2016 football season they were among the best players in Montana. The dynamic duo recently learned they will get one more chance to showcase their skills on the high school level. Simon and Larsen were two of the 80 players recently named to the roster for the 2017 Montana East-West Shrine game. The 71st annual game will take place July 15 at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, and will raise money for the Shriner's...

  • Taking a look back at 2016

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Dec 28, 2016

There were plenty of important stories that took place in Whitehall and the surrounding areas in 2016. Probably the biggest news story of the year started in late May, when shock waves were sent through the community when local resident Lynn Nemeth began circulating recall petitions for Mayor Dale Davis and Town Council members Gary Housman, Vincent Keogh, Joe Adams, and Tom Jenkin. Nemeth stated in her petition that misconduct had happened at April Council meeting. A recall election had tentatively been scheduled for August 16 after Nemeth...

  • Commission opens public comment period

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Dec 28, 2016

At a meeting last week, the Jefferson County Commissioners opened the public comment period for a proposed Jefferson Valley Rural Ambulance District. According to Commissioner Leonard Wortman, the comment period will be open the next two to three weeks. He said they have not set a date to consider a Resolution of Intent for the district proposed by members of the Jefferson Valley EMS and Rescue, but he thinks it will be in three weeks. “If we approve that, then we would order the referendum this spring,” he said. The Commissioners voted 3-0...

  • Editorial: 2017: A perfect time to join chamber

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Dec 28, 2016

This edition of the Whitehall Ledger features a couple of year-end stories that are a great way to take a quick glance back at 2016. It’s a bit of a daunting task going through the first 51 issues of the Ledger, but at the same time is worthwhile to be reminded of some of the amazing people who work and live here. While the area does not have a large population, there are certainly quite a few events throughout the year. Some of the bigger events include Frontier Days, the Christmas Stroll, and the Black Tie/Blue Jeans fundraiser. The common t...

  • Column: White Christmas

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Dec 28, 2016

Last week was refreshing. On both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day I was able to sleep in. It's something I'd like to do a lot more of, I just never really get the chance. I had planned sleeping a little bit later on Christmas Eve, but for some reason every time I'm not up by 8 a.m., Melissa starts making some magical noises with pots and pans in the kitchen. I'm not quite sure what she is doing in there, but it sounds like she is grabbing the pan from the bottom of the pile and yanking it out...

  • Trojans compete at Mixer

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Dec 28, 2016

The Whitehall High School wrestling team was able to get one more night of action before Christmas at last weeks' Anaconda Mixer. Trojan Coach Steve Sacry said it's always a good trip to Anaconda. "There was a good crowd and a lot of energy in the gym," he said. Whitehall had two duals at the Thursday event, the first a 36-33 loss to Columbus. Sacry said in dual matches it makes a big difference if they don't have a wrestler in each weight class and because of open classes, Columbus started...

  • A year to remember for Whitehall Trojan football

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Dec 28, 2016

There was one sporting story that stood above the rest in 2016. It was a special year for the Whitehall/Harrison High School football team. A talented and hungry team came together for a magical run and made it to the all the way MHSA Class B Semifinals. The amazing season came to an end November 12 against Eureka. After taking a 7-6 lead into halftime, they were outscored 30-0 in the second half by the eventual state champions. The Trojans finished the season with an impressive 10-2 record....

  • Temperatures drop, games cancelled

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Dec 21, 2016

According to the National Weather Service, the temperature in Whitehall dropped to -24 on the morning of December 17. AccuWeather.com reported the low on December 17 in Whitehall at -37. The storm that brought with it large amounts of snow and gusty winds caused road closures across the state and the cancellation of numerous high school sporting events. The Whitehall High School boys and gi...
