This weekend millions around the country will gather at various locations to watch Super Bowl 51. The game that decides the champion of the National Football League, has taken on a life of its own. Along with the die-hard fans, the game also draws interest from the casual fan, people who want to see the halftime show, and people who hate sports and are only interested in watching and deciding the best commercials. Much of this viewing is done at numerous parties at houses, bars, restaurants, and various other places. Many people have vocally...

This week I have a story in the paper about a painting event taken place later this month at Legends. I really feel it's amazing to have events like this in a small town. As much as I would like to go, I don't think that would be the best of ideas. Sure I may go get some pictures and do a little story, but I won't be painting any pictures. While I'm sure I was blessed with a few nice qualities -- drawing, painting, or anything to do with music are not my specialties. When I was in grade school,...

Two weeks ago the Lady Herders picked up a 36-33 win in Varsity Gym. Whitehall girl's coach Herman Gerving said the Lady Trojans need to come out stronger and not let the other team get the lead. He said...

She is now sharing both her love for and experience in dance with the residents of Whitehall and surrounding area. In 2015, Christensen started teaching classes one day a week at the Community Center, and in September of 2016 moved the Christensen School of Dance to a new location at 23 West Legion Ave. in Whitehall. • Column: Mud in my ears

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 25, 2017

Every newspaper is a little bit different when it comes to listening to police calls. Some will have the scanner on at all times, some will just turn it on when they hear sirens, and some won't turn it on at all. I've found there has to be some sort of happy medium, but this was gained from experiencing all three. The first newspaper I worked at had the scanner going all the time. It was a town much larger than Whitehall and it never stopped. It was almost impossible to get anything done with...

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 25, 2017

The Whitehall High School boy's basketball team was firing on all cylinders defensively Friday night in a runaway victory over Jefferson County High School. The Trojans (11-1, 6-0 5B) held the rival Panthers to six or less points in three quarters, including giving up just two points in the first period of the 62-24 victory. The game could not have been more different than the first matchup between the two teams last week, a 51-47 Whitehall victory last Tuesday in Boulder. Whitehall would open...

Led by the sharp shooting of sophomore Max Feight and a strong defensive performance in the second half, the Trojans won their ninth game in a row Tuesday night against Big Timber. Feight had a game high 30 points and after trailing by one at half time, Whitehall would allow just 17 second half points in the 67-49 victory. With the win, Whitehall moved to 9-1 on the season and is a perfect 5-0 in 5B League play. The win came one...

  • Fire destroys Whitehall home

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 18, 2017

The early morning hours last Tuesday were not that unusual for Whitehall resident Bruce Hayes. Things would change in a heartbeat. Bruce, who suffers from a back injury, could not sleep much like many other nights throughout the year. He decided to step outside to take a look at the night sky, and when he turned around he saw smoke coming from his residence located at 973 MT Highway 2 West. He rushed inside and made sure his wife Tricia and dog Beasley got out of the house. After this, Bruce...

After two decades of marriage, Bruce and Christina Binkowski decided it was time to move out of Southern California and on to a new adventure. While they were searching for new homes in places like Arizona and Washington, they heard the John Denver song "Wild Montana Skies" play on the radio and this pointed the compass for their search in a new direction. They would soon find a spot of land in Jefferson County, and in 2005 they built on the property. The couple spent a great deal of time at...

  • December near target at Golden Sunlight

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 18, 2017

The last month of the year netted some of the best results of 2016 at the Barrick Golden Sunlight Mine. At the Community Transition Advisory Committee meeting last Thursday, Mine General Manager Dan Banghart reported the production at the mine was 4,123 ounces, just short of the target for the month. Banghart said it was one of the better months of 2016, and he was pleased with how the year ended. He added the tonnages in the mill and underground both exceeded their targets in December. Also at the meeting, Banghart told committee members they...

  • Editorial: Schools, infrastructure among key concerns

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 18, 2017

The 2017 session of the Montana State Legislature started earlier this month in Helena. In the first few days of the session, there were a lot of concerns voiced about the budget and how it will affect communities across the state. While it is never easy dealing with less money, the primary concern of this budget should be schools, towns and communities, safety and infrastructure. The students in each and every school need to be taken care of during this session. This means a top priority is the funding that will allow for quality staff,...

  • Column: You're not welcome

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 18, 2017

There are some things that happen every once in a while in life that absolutely blow my mind. Last week was a perfect example. I had stopped for coffee at a local convenience store and was making my way out of the building when someone opened the door for me. I politely thanked the man who seemed to be in his late 20's or early 30's. What came next confused me to the point it rendered me silent. He proceeded to tell me "You're not welcome". At first I thought I must had heard him wrong, but I di...

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 18, 2017

Going into last week's Choteau Tournament, Whitehall High School wrestling coach Steve Sacry knew the event would give a good snapshot of the many wrestlers his squad would be competing with at the B/C state tournament. The Trojan squad showed they were among the best in the state with a fifth place finish. Sacry said while wrestling is very much an individual sport, team points are gained for each win and advancement in the tournament. "We had set a team goal of being in the top five. The...
