  • Concerned Citizens 3/12 Meeting Recap

    HOLLY HARPER, Whitehall Concernd Citizens|Mar 19, 2025

Whitehall's Concerned Citizens group has grown, and at the last meeting, held Wednesday, March 12, in the Whitehall Community Library, a total of 15 people attended and contributed to the discussion. Should the group exceed 20 people, a new location will be needed - but the group is very pleased to see so many new faces and welcomes all to attend. The group opened with a "Real or Fake" AI quiz and discussed types of media bias. We generally agree on the bias placement from right to left for...

  • Op-Ed: Libby Montana Needs Your Attention

    HOLLY HARPER, Whitehalls Concern Citizens|Mar 19, 2025

I am writing to bring to your attention a set of 5 bills that are harmful to regular Montanans in general, and specifically right now to the people of Libby, Montana, involved in asbestos litigation. SB 385 (Sen Tom McGillvray) creates a "governor-appointed" special court that has the same clout as a state district court, except the judges are not elected and, as such, are not answerable to the people who elected them. The special court this bill creates will also include the "asbestos court," h...

  • Join the Discussion: Concerned Citizens Meet Wednesdays, 6 PM at Library

    HOLLY HARPER, Concerned Citizens Discussion|Mar 12, 2025

The Wednesday, March 5th meeting, with 10 people in attendance, began with historian David Brooks recent address to the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship and sparked a good discussion on ways to bridge divides. The Montana Legislative website continues to be challenging, as do several process points that we have noticed as bills move along, die, or get killed. We will persevere. The discussion shifted from the state to the federal personnel cuts by DOGE, and the question arose, “By what right are all these firings and layoffs h...

  • Concerned Citizens Meet at Library Wednesdays, 6 PM

    HOLLY HARPER, Whitehall Concerned Citizens|Mar 5, 2025

A group of concerned citizens meets Wednesdays from 6-7 PM at the Whitehall Community Library. If you need help with the Legislative website, BillTracker, or your Substack media account, please come at 5:30 PM. The regular meeting will begin at 6 PM. At our Feb 26 meeting, we reviewed the functions of the legislative website that had stumped us previously: the recorded hearing videos are accessed via the “Now Streaming” button (or course!). The bill tracker function works, the state pays for it, and it is a separate platform that will send you...

  • Whitehall's Politically Concerned Citizens Meet Wednesdays at 6 PM at Library

While Whitehall’s newly formed politically-minded conversation group does not have an official name, it does have an official meeting date and time for your calendars. The Whitehall Community Library basement meeting space has been reserved on Wednesdays from 6 PM to 7 PM to accomodate this group discussion. Everyone is welcome. Here is a recap of their first meeting, held Wednesday, February 19, 2025: Six people met in the library. We opened with a discussion of reliable sources for current events and the statement that the goal of any r...

  • JVRAD Fees Not Implemented on Town Tax Bill

HOLLY HARPER, Jefferson Valley Rural Ambulance District|Feb 28, 2024

Residents of the Town of Whitehall have repeatedly indicated their desire to financially support the local ambulance service, first through petitions, then through a ballot vote in November of 2022 to join the Jefferson Valley Rural Ambulance District (JVRAD). The astute Town of Whitehall resident might have noticed that the $29 fee that should have appeared on your most recent tax bill did not, in fact, appear at all. The board of the JVRAD is optimistic that this omission will be corrected in...

Holly Harper, Jefferson Valley Rural Ambulance District|Apr 21, 2021

Special thanks go to Sandy Carey for assisting with the writing of the NW Farm Credit Services grant. The stair chairs keep patients and care providers safer than other means of carrying patients down stairs. The NWFCS award was presented prior to the...

  • JVEMSR Ambulance Service Feels the Love

    Holly Harper, JVRAD board member|Sep 2, 2020

"This is for the ambulance folks, right? Keep the change." At Saturday's yard sale for the ambulance service, those words were said repeatedly. The five-hour yard sale earned over $400 and reaffirmed the support the local community has for the excellent work that is provided by the ambulance crew. Donations for the sale came in all morning, and business was brisk. The next yard sale event to benefit the ambulance service will be September 12th from 9:30-1:30. If you have items that you would...

  • WHS Class of 2010 Raising Funds for Whitehall School District

    Holly Harper, Contributing Writer|May 20, 2020

The Whitehall Class of 2010 has decided to cancel the upcoming ten-year reunion and repurpose those funds to benefit Whitehall Schools. Senior class officers are senior class officers unto death, and so the same individuals who planned the 2010 senior trip to Denver and spent hours in concessions are now setting up a GoFundMe site and asking fellow graduates to donate the monies that they would have spent coming home for the summer reunion. 2010 graduates Amy Reavis, Travis Volz, Kellee Glaus...
