  • Introducing a New Fiction Column

    Elizabeth Pullman, Whitehall Ledger|Jul 14, 2021

When I first took over the Whitehall Ledger I thought long and hard on how you could bring creative writing into the newspaper world. There are so many talented writers who live among us, I wanted to provide an outlet to them as well. Well, I think I have found the solution. The Jefferson Valley Museum has dozens and dozens of photographs from centuries long past. These photos have been researched, but no one has been successful in identifying the people in them or the scene they depict. Why not take these photos and write what we think is...

  • Enjoy...Be Safe...and Send Me Pictures!

    Elizabeth Pullman, Whitehall Ledger|Jun 30, 2021

Ahhh, fireworks! I love them so much! BUT I get hurt nearly every year around the Fourth of July, mostly due to my own stupidity. I've caught sparks in my eye in the past, burning my contact to my eyeball. We've mis-lit launching fireworks, which have tipped and gone directly into the group of everyone watching. In 2020, an estimated 15,600 people were seen for fireworks-related injuries at hospital emergency departments, according to data collected by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission...

  • Burglaries Plague Whitehall; Sheriff Asks Residents to Be Vigilant

    Elizabeth Pullman, Whitehall Ledger|Jun 23, 2021

In this day of social media, we hear about local crimes via Facebook before we ever see the police report in the paper. But that doesn't mean that our local sheriff's department isn't in the know. In fact, they are working behind the scenes while we are all sleeping, working to keep us and our belongings safe, before those Facebook posts are posted. Lately a rash of burglaries has taken place in Whitehall and Sheriff Craig Doolittle wants the town to know his deputies are working hard to fight...

That’s exactly what the Ledger is going for! The Ledger is beginning Ladies Day Out this Sunday! A few months ago, the Whitehall Ledger started fundraising for four radar signs to go along east/west Legion Avenue and north/south Whitehall Street. The Whitehall Ledger is excited to announce that several great individuals have come forward and donated to the cause, as well as several local entities have offered assistance to the cause. While we have not quite met the halfway point for funds, we are off to a great start! However, now is my time to ask for the community’s assistance. After speaking with the Montana DOT and several other o...

A much debated topic - the exclusion of the Town of Whitehall from the Jefferson Valley Rural Ambulance District (JVRAD) - will have a chance to be voted upon on the next ballot, according to Town Councilor’s decision at Monday’s June Town Council meeting. The topic was brought before the Council again last month by Councilor Katy James. JVRAD had informed the Town that ambulance fees would increase to $100 per service call for all residents outside the district. James submitted a letter of support to enter into the district via one of thr...

  • It's the Little Things...Literally

    Elizabeth Pullman, Whitehall Ledger|Jun 16, 2021

I found out that I would 100% become the owner of The Whitehall Ledger right around December last year. Because of this, my family wanted to focus my Christmas presents around things I would need/want for the office. My husband was very specific - tell me the one thing you know you will absolutely want to have in your office, and send me a link to exactly what you want. I knew I wanted a refrigerator. I NEED things to do drink, a fridge was a no-brainer. But I wanted it to be cute and retro; so...

  • How To Make a Small Difference in a Big World

    Elizabeth Pullman, Whitehall Ledger|Jun 9, 2021

I am always amazed when people tell me what they are passionate about. Whether it's music, skateboarding, video games or books, their passion for the topic shines through. The light in their eyes sparkle and their smiles are genuine. But when someone tells me about a passion project that helps someone else in some small way - which could be a monumental way to those they are helping - that's truly amazing. Rhonda Brant Hampton, a local resident, stopped into my office to let me know about the...

  • What Was Going on Out in Waterloo?

    Elizabeth Pullman, Whitehall Ledger|Jun 9, 2021

The Whitehall Ledger received several dozen phone calls, emails, and Facebook messages in the past few weeks, all asking the same question. “What is going on in Waterloo?” Many had noticed that a film crew was outside Waterloo, with actors in period-correct costumes for the fur-trader time period. Funny enough, The Ledger has the inside scoop and will bringing you some amazing photos and interviews with some of the key components behind it all - EVENTUALLY. Local Whitehall resident and Montana History “Live” founder Mark Brown (who also happens...

  • We The People...Looking Into Tactical Civics

    Elizabeth Pullman, Whitehall Ledger|Jun 9, 2021

Steve Wagner, state coordinator, and Jim Buterbaugh, southern Jefferson County representative for Tactical Civics want to dispel a few misunderstandings and rumors, while re-introducing Whitehall, as well as the rest of the state, to how the country was "meant" to be run. According to TacticalCivics.com, "TACTICAL...

  • Baustian's "Good Friends" Series Available

    Elizabeth Pullman, Whitehall Ledger|Jun 9, 2021

Whitehall resident Shirley Baustian is known for her friendly smile and wonderful personality - but did you know she is an accomplished children's book author as well as illustrator? Her children's book series "Good Friends," which features a moose and his mouse friend, was spawned from a misunderstanding of language. "We were in Sweden when a friend of mine said, looking way off in the distance, 'Oh!! Look!! A mouse just went by!' and I laughed because I was amazed by how great his eye sight...

    Elizabeth Pullman, Whitehall Ledger|Jun 2, 2021

The American Rescue Plan Act meeting is scheduled for tonight at 6 p.m. at the Borden’s Conference Room. This meeting will provide information on the ARPA Act and allow for public comment on how Jefferson County should spend almost $2.4 million in the county. Jefferson County Commissioners received the “U.S. Treasury Interim Final Rule & Guidance for State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds” on May 24, 2021, which provides guidance on how to use the ARPA funds, which, before this document, was a bit vague. The document, at 26 pages, is a lot o...

  • Transparency in All Aspects of Life

    Elizabeth Pullman, Whitehall Ledger|May 26, 2021

I rarely get upset about politics to the point that I am vocal about them. I usually just don’t see the point because my little voice has most likely already been echoed by many others on the same topic. But last Thursday at the ARPA meeting in Boulder I became upset with what I am simply calling a lack of transparency. And the more that I think about it, there is a lack of transparency in nearly every aspect of our every day lives. We should make ourselves aware of that and how we can change for the better. When the Chamber of Commerce was inf...
