Fall is in the air! The nights are cooler, the mornings call for a light sweater, and pumpkin spice EVERYTHING is as far as the eye can see. This also means my craziest, funnest, most loved time of the year is about to begin - haunted house building! My bestie and I found a great Tik Tok video on how to make Halloween shirts with wood cutouts and bleach. We decided this would be a perfect way to kick off the build; we'd make ourselves and our helpers some "uniforms" for fun! On Saturday morning...
Montana History “Live”, a Whitehall non-profit, prides itself on historically accurate interpretation of time periods, from the 1600s to the late 1800s. Whitehall locals Mark and Sharon Brown created the non-profit in hopes of bringing history back to life. For the last ten years, they have brought Bannack State Park back to its heyday of the 1860s. In cooperation with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and the National Park Service, Bannack Living History Week has brought in thousands of att...
Thirteen year old Zane Downey took the MontanaFair in Billings by storm, winning three of the most prestigious awards available at the largest of Montana's summer season Junior livestock shows. Downey, an eighth grader this year, shows under the Golden Livestock 4H Club in Lewis and Clark county and has been involved in 4H for the last six years. He and his lamb, Eric - who he has had since April - blew the competition out of the water, winning: Grand Champion Market Lamb, Grand Champion Junior...
We spend our entire lives trying to ignore the one thing that is certain in life: death. It's not a pretty topic, it's not something any of us like to think about. And because of that, we sometimes forget that it is a major part of all our lives, until we are reminded. I've been reminded a lot lately. The obituary section has been increasingly hard - as I've talked about before. But this week Mr. Barry McWilliams' obituary came to my desk. As many of you know, Barry drew the amazing editorial...
Hard work and determination are difficult things to taste, unless you’re feasting upon some of the Carey brothers Devils Fence Beef. Bo and Justin Carey are fifth generation cattle producers, with their children beginning the sixth generation. The Carey family settled in the Boulder Valley in 1896. Now the brothers and their families have ventured into their own business with Devils Fence Beef, just outside Boulder. The Devils Fence is a naturally occurring geological structure that sits on t...
We see it in the movies - a crime; a footprint on the ground; and then someone who immediately knows which way the culprit went. Well, the science behind tracking isn't immediate, but it is fascinating; a definitive skill all law enforcement, search and rescue, military specialists, and the like should have. Thanks to a training offered at Indiana University and helmed by Joel Hardin, from Idaho, of Joel Hardin Professional Tracking Service, many more individuals now have those precious skills....
A petition for approval of the proposed radar signs on Whitehall Street and Legion Avenue is now available at the Whitehall Ledger Office. The office is normally open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday - Friday unless closed to cover a story. Two petitions are available - one specifically for businesses and and residents directly located on one of the two proposed locations, and the other petition for those who are not “directly” affected by the signage, but support the cause. The Whitehall Ledger began work on the proposed signs in early spring aft...
An application for an amendment to an outfitting permit has drawn criticism on local social media pages. The amendment from Montana Trophy Outfitters (owned and operated by Whitehall native Forrest Lewton), was applied for through the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Butte Field Office and requests the below changes to their existing special recreation permit (Permit #MT-070-18-09). The acreage is in the the 370 and 380 hunting districts. According to the BLM website, Montana Trophy Outfitters is currently permitted to provide deer and elk...

Further details will be provided at a later date....
It has been a busy week and, once again, I find myself wishing I could clone myself. I want to be in all places at all times, but it just isn’t possible. I am so unbelievably thankful for the help of Charles Shank and Kari Montgomery this week - they helped catch moments I couldn’t be there for or didn’t see myself. Kari took on the Madison County Fair and provided some amazing photos - with more available in next week’s paper. Charles helped capture moments at Shakespeare in the Park that I didn’t (partially because I was too wrapped up in the...
At the monthly Whitehall Chamber of Commerce meeting on Thursday, August 12, the Chamber recapped the successful Frontier Days event and began plans for the Fall Festival in October. All agreed that the July Frontier Days event brought in the largest crowds in recent memory, with a packed rodeo, massive crowds at the parade, large turnout for the rod run, and happy vendors. Plans for the 2022 event have already begun. The Chamber coordinator position is still open and needs to be filled. The Board has received five applications and interviews...

Have you visited our Whitehall Community Library lately? Without a doubt, it is one of the busiest places in Whitehall, day in and day out. Librarian Jeannie Ferriss and staff have done an amazing job developing a plethora of fun and educational activities for all ages. Now, two major developments have happened at the library that will affect even more people in, and out, of our community! The library receives a grant to create a Business Resource Center within the library system. Ferriss has been taking Montana State Library classes with the A...

I was introduced to music at a very young age. My mom is an accomplished organ and piano player, who has taught for years. She taught me to appreciate classical, instrumental, and more traditional music. My dad, the Metallica, Ted Nugent, and ZZ Top rocker introduced me to rock and roll. As we moved from state to state with the military, my music choices changed to "fit in" with my surroundings. My first concert was Garth Brooks with my mom. Then I moved on to an appreciation for a bit of rap (o...
SCREAMS COME TRUE, Whitehall’s haunted house and hay maze, has been scaring kids and adults every October and we are excited to start plans for the 2021 installation! Yes, SCREAMS COME TRUE is in its THIRD year AND we survived a pandemic! 2020 was a bit strange for us, as we had to accommodate COVID-19 Restrictions and set up timed appointments for entering the haunted house, as well as disinfect after each tour—but we did it! SCREAMS COME TRUE is an amazing opportunity to be a part of something unique and exciting. We are looking for ass...
In the early morning hours of Saturday, July 31, 2021 sirens went off, notifying Whitehall and surrounding areas of a wreck on I-90 by Pipestone. As the day passed, stories circulated on social media of the crash and what little details were known about the accident, which claimed the lives of four and put two others in the hospital. On Monday, August 2nd, Sheriff Craig Doolittle released the names of the deceased. Forty-five year old Adrian Hollis, of Spokane, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban eastbound in the westbound lane on Interstate...
My family has always been a bit theatrical. I blame my parents, living history interpreters who brought my brother and I up in rendezvous and reenactments. My mother played Mary Todd Lincoln watching “Our American Cousin” at a reenactment they began in Keokuk, IA. My father, playing John Wilkes Booth, appropriately broke his ankle after shooting Lincoln and jumping off a balcony onto the stage. Devotion to character development right there! In high school I found theatre on my own - at first playing bit parts and running the lights from bac...
Yowzers! Was that a Frontier Days or what? I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people in Whitehall! The restaurants were booming, the vendors were busy, the kids were out in full force and I saw a smile on most everyone’s face. It was a great weekend and I saw the community really come together to make it all happen. My only regret is that I don’t have two or three (or twelve) clones of myself so that I could be everywhere I wanted to be. It just wasn’t possible. And because of this I wasn’t able to get all of the moments captured that I had...

Are you ready for a good time?! I am! And let me tell you, Whitehall’s 2021 Frontier Days looks like it is going to be just that! Frontier Days, for me, began last week with me trying to get the paper out on time with a massive Frontier Days special section. What started off as a four page special section soon grew into a 12 page feature section! It is so great to see so many businesses working towards specials, events, and more at their locations during Frontier Days! The Whitehall Chamber of Commerce has put blood, sweat, and tears into t...
10 Root Salon has rooted itself into Whitehall as its newest salon! Casey Shaw purchased the business from Leslie Dyson, which was formerly Dalene's Salon. The business was renamed, the building's decor revamped, and opened as 406 Roots on the first of July. Dyson will remain at the 406 Roots location but has plans to retire. She is currently not taking any new clients. The decor in the salon, namely the photo on the wall in the picture at right, was what inspired the name of the business. "I...
The July meeting of the Town Council brought resolution to a long-standing delinquent bill, which was approved for payment at Monday night’s meeting. The bill, the remaining half due for replacement of faulty siding on the Town Hall building, was for work completed in 2017 by BBG Construction. Owner Jared Brown was available for discussion at the meeting and explained the situation, which had many at fault. The building was originally sided with CertainTeed fiber cement siding, which was faulty, and the company currently has class-action l...
