It’s been a year since I took over the Ledger! What a wild ride! While I know where I’d like to improve in the next year, I would really appreciate hearing what readers think should and should not be in the paper, where coverage is lacking, what new features you like and what you don’t, etc. Please use the survey link https://bit.ly/3pS9FM5 and provide your honest answers. I hope to hone in on what I can be doing better. There is so much room for improvement and growth that just weren’t possible in the first year. In the next year I hope to...

On New Year’s Eve last year, I anxiously awaited the clock to strike midnight. Why? Because my big news about purchasing the Whitehall Ledger could officially be released as of January 1, 2021. Was I scared of this new adventure I was about to embark on? Absolutely. I still am. But I know I’m where I’m supposed to be. This time last year, there were a lot of unknowns in my life. My family and friends pulled me through these what-ifs with their support and love. Taking on a life dream is super scary, super exciting, and, I’ve found, super f...

He knows everything there is to know about electrical fences...but that chapter of his life is coming to an end and a new one is about to begin. Larry Feight, who has been working in electric fencing since 1982 and has owned High Country Ag since 1987, has sold his business. While this sounds like he might be on the path to retirement, he won't quite admit that thus far. "I'm tired," Feight said with a laugh. "But I'm still sticking around to help train the new owner (Elliott Perfili) and keep t...
It's been a long time coming," Cara Sacry said with a smile. Sacry, along with Konnie Smith and several others have been working several years to bring the Whitehall Food Pantry into its own building. Previously located in a small space at the Trinity Methodist Church, the Whitehall Food Pantry now has a new building on Division Street, near the entrance to the Whitehall Rodeo Grounds. The building is due to a large donation by a Whitehall resident who has since passed. The new building began...

She financed the remainder of the $474,000 purchase price and produced notarized documents stating her father-in-law was the co-borrower. Law enforcement said she forged her father-in-law's signature as a co-sign...

The holiday festivities continue next week with the Whitehall Christmas Concert on Tuesday, December 14th at 7PM and the Cardwell Elementary School Christmas Concert on Wednesday, December 15th at 6PM. Christmas Tree, What Will You Be? is the theme for the Whitehall elementary student concert. Following impact, the minivan and bus came to rest in the roadway. The 52-year-old male driver was declared dead at the scene. His 35-year-old female passenger of Belgrade went to...
I had an experience on Monday while covering the horrific bus vs van accident. The incident is something I cannot ignore and is what spurred this editorial. In February 2009, Dallice Smith was killed in a car accident on Highway 69. She was a friend, a former teammate on softball leagues, and someone the majority of our community knew by sight. At the time of her death, I worked at the Ledger. When news of her accident broke, the former owner and Editor of the Ledger chose to run photos of the scene. I disagreed with his decision, but I was...

While everyone knows my passion for Halloween, some might be surprised that I adore Christmas as well. I love Christmas cookies, singing carols, lying under the Christmas tree and looking up into the lights, and finding the perfect present for my loved ones. I may think that our stores start pushing Christmas a bit too early (come on, before Halloween is here?!) However, I definitely could get behind celebrating year round because of the following: 1. Holiday music is so happy and cheerful! Jingle Bells gets stuck in my head in the middle of...
On Monday, November 15 the seventh and eighth grade students of Mrs. Ehlers' Harrison School class made their way to River Camp in Cardwell to learn the traditional skills of skinning, graining, and prepping animal hides for tanning/dressing. "I don't call it tanning, because we aren't using tannic acid," Instructor Barnes explained to the students. "Really what we are doing is "dressing" the animal in preparation for a lecithin treatment." He explained that very rarely does he now use brains...
