At the annual Jefferson Local Development Corporation awards banquet, held Wednesday, August 17 in Boulder, two of Whitehall's Chamber of Commerce Board member businesses were honored, Settings by All Things Montana (Whitehall) and Arctic Heat (Boulder). Nature Story Montessori (Montana City) was also honored with the Community Improvement Award. "I feel humbled and honored to be chosen. Settings is a labor of love and it feels amazing for others to see its value, " said Pamela Polachi,...
The Whitehall Sustainability Committee is pleased to announce that Nevada Gold mines, operating locally as Barrick Golden Sunlight Mine, has approved and funded its first project via the grant process vetted by the Whitehall Sustainability Committee. The project, submitted by the Town of Whitehall, is for a playground on Legion Street. We are grateful for the generous support of Barrick in the amount of $35,000 and the vision of the town in regards to this project, which will provide community and visiting children a safe place to play for...
It's the cliche statement we hear every year. Summer went by too fast. Whitehall School starts today and summer is over. I've always enjoyed the start of a new school year. My son gets a haircut, he dresses up in his new school clothes, and school spirit is at its highest - at least for the first few days. But this year, I can't. I'm not ready. I blinked and I missed it. This year my son is a senior. What happened? This past Sunday I took him to have his senior photo consultation. He expressed...
At the first school board meeting of the 2022-2023 school year, it was overwhelmingly obvious that students will be returning to a much-improved school fall. “The custodial and maintenance teams deserve a ton of credit,” Superintendent Hannah Nieskens said. “At the beginning of the summer we weren’t sure if everything would get done before school started, but it is.” Nieskens listed off a few of the many repairs and updates made over the summer, including: • 91 windows replaced • 27 rooms in the Elementary school refloored, • new flooring in...
The internet is all abuzz about a recent video showing Chef Gordon Ramsay saying it's "oven time" and "yummy yum" to a lamb he's selected to eat. Why is this so funny, to me at least? Because of its timing, as we finish the Madison County Fair and move on to the Jefferson County Fair. Each year hundreds of 4H club members select, raise, and then sell their animals - with most buyers intending to slaughter and eat them. Bidders come from far and wide to see whose animal will weigh the most and...
Mayor Mary Janacaro-Hensleigh started off the August Town Council meeting, held in the Town Hall, by dispelling a recent rumor. “The Town did not kill the Rotary Fish Pond’s fish. It is sad that it happened, but the Town did not have anything to do with it,” she said. The Rotary Club Fish Pond, which turns 100 years old this year, housed fish throughout the summer. Late last month it was discovered the fish were deceased as the valves inside the pond were manually turned off. Town Clerk Allissa Christensen said that the Town’s IRS issues...
This weekend three of my ladies and I went to Gunslinger Gulch in Anaconda and participated in a murder mystery game, along with 23 other individuals. This 52-acre ghost town brought us all the fun this past weekend and I just wanted to let others know about it! Gunslinger Gulch is one of those Montana places you hear about but don't really take notice of until you're there. Did Google Maps get us there on the first try? Definitely no! Did we dress up? Of course! Did we guess the correct...
While the name Debbie Holwegner may not sound familiar, her daughter and grandson's voices might. Jessica Jane Hegg and her son Jaxon frequently perform at Whitehall's Beats & Eats events. At one point you may have had their duet, Fishin' for Chickens, stuck in your head. Now, this mother of two is working to accomplish a miracle by donating two-thirds of her liver to her mother, Debbie Holwegner - a grandmother you might find it in your heart to support. Debbie, of Manhattan, MT, was diagnosed...
On Thursday, July 28, 2022, Whitehall resident Tim Schober became a cyborg. Well, not fully cyborg, but he did volunteer to have an RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) chip implanted into his hand, making him, in fact, part machine. Schober, who is the Montana Science Center’s (MSC) Director of Technology, was gifted the RFID and spoke on Transhumanism to a group at the MSC “After Dark” series following the implantation of the chip into his hand. The Montana Science Center (MSC), locat...
Summer is in full swing and it's hard to find a friend, neighbor, or young one who hasn’t enjoyed the Whitehall Community Pool this summer. Not only does the pool provide a great place to cool down during a hot day, but it also provides several lifeguarding jobs throughout the summer. “We’ve always had a great turnout from the community, but in the last three years, we’ve gotten a following with people from Bozeman, Manhattan, Three Forks, and Dillon, coming to our pool,” Allissa Christenson, To...
While the museum portion of the Western Legacy Center (WLC) is still in the planning and implementation stages, the Montana Made gift shop within the WLC recently opened its doors to its first customers. "First purchase at the Western Legacy Center" one local posted, showing a Montana Jam and Candle hand-poured soy candle. Many did not realize the gift shop had opened since the museum portion itself is not complete. But Pamela Polachi, the gift shop coordinator, is excited to announce they are o...
Specializing in quality vintage clothing from the 1940s to the 1990s, M&M Vintage is a refreshing step back into time. The shop, owned and operated by Monique Morris, is located in the former Ropers building at 7 N Main Street. Morris, along with her husband Charlie, a general contractor, purchased the historic piece of Whitehall's history earlier this year and have been working to revamp all of the spaces into something fun and functional for Whitehall. Currently, only the M&M Vintage space is...
Whitehall's biggest weekend, the annual Frontier Days celebration, went off without a hitch this past weekend. So many activities occurred throughout the town that it's hard to keep track of them all! Here's a quick recap! • M&M Vintage held its grand opening in the former Roper's building. • The Kids Tractor Pull took place on Main Street under the direction of Mike and Kristy Price and Tanya Jorgenson. Thank you to the speedy welder who helped repair the tractor during the contest! • The B...
Some people do things simply out of the goodness of their hearts, not wanting anything in return. Several of these wonderful people came into my life last week. The crew of Expedition Church (the vendor booth giving out the free fans with filters, for those of you wondering whom I'm talking about!) brought over a dozen volunteers to the Whitehall community, just to help in any way they could with Frontier Days. Not only did they help check in vendors, sponsor the rodeo, play music on the Main...
At the public forum concerning the proposed Whitehall playground, held Tuesday, July 12, over a dozen residents voiced their desire to have a public playground for the town. The main question of the evening? Where? Town Clerk Allissa Christensen has taken the playground proposal to several funding entities herself and garnered funds from the Dennis & Phillis Washington Foundation, Town Pump, and several others; she is currently awaiting approval for funds from the Whitehall Sustainability Committee and the Whitehall Tax Increment Fund. No town...
After nearly a year of development, the first draft of the Whitehall TAax Increment Fund Master Plan has its first draft, as provided by Stahly Engineering. The Whitehall Tax Increment Fund (WTIF) Board and a steering committee have been working with Stahly Engineering, Headwaters RC&D, and Jefferson Local Development Corporation to complete a Master Plan. It will be a great asset to the WTIF district for future projects. The Master Plan explores the following for Whitehall: • Infrastructure • Arts and culture • Parks, trails, recreation • Pub...

Looking for a new hobby? Want to make your own Christmas presents this year? The Copper K Fiber Festival is the place to learn, and they have a great selection of workshops to choose from. A destination fiber festival, taking place in the remote countryside, the Copper K Fiber Fest is taking fiber arts back to its roots with this amazing weekend in the country. The Fiber Festival will be held at the Copper K Barn outside of Whitehall July 16-17; the event is free to attend, but workshops carry a...
At the July monthly meeting of the Whitehall Town Council, held Monday, July 11, budgets were the item on everyone’s mind. From the town clerk to the county commission, as well as all the committees, budgets were being finalized, discussed, and amended as July marks the beginning of the new fiscal year. Besides budgets, upcoming events such as the Copper K Fiber Festival this weekend at the Copper K Barn as well as Shakespeare in the Park at the Main Street Green on July 18 and Whitehall’s annual Frontier Days events were discussed. Mayor Mar...
A public forum for a proposed playground available to all Whitehall residents and those passing through will be held Tuesday, July 12 at 6 PM at the Town Hall Chambers. The playground, spearheaded by Town Clerk Allissa Christensen, will be funded nearly entirely by grants. The project, which was presented for funding to the Whitehall Sustainability Committee, was proposed for Legion Park, but the public meeting will seek further comment on the location. "The goal of this project is to provide a...
Many hands make light work! While Whitehall's Frontier Days Event is brought to you by the Whitehall Chamber of Commerce, it takes a community of volunteers to make the event seamless and successful. Interested in helping? Check out where we need help the most: SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK: King Lear kicks off the Frontier Days week on Monday, July 18. Gold Junction Presents (GJP) and the Whitehall Chamber are currently seeking three sponsors at $300 each to bring MSIP to Whitehall. Also, GJP could...
The mission of the Whitehall Chamber of Commerce is to bring individuals, businesses, and organizations together to enrich the community of Whitehall. The annual Whitehall Frontier Days Rodeo is one of the best ways to accomplish this, but help is needed! This year’s Wyldman Rodeo will be held Friday, June 22 at the Whitehall Rodeo Grounds. Rodeos are expensive to produce; the Chamber is immensely appreciative of the sponsorships received in the past to assist with the rodeo and hopes you will consider sponsoring, at any level, in 2022. Even j...
“I have a big three-car ambulance garage that I think would make a great Western Legacy Center (WLC),” said Mayor Mary Janacaro-Hensleigh at the Jefferson County Commissioner meeting on June 14, held in Cardwell.”You know, Town Hall and Western Legacy Center right there on Legion Avenue. Just a thought, but there’s always always another plan. There’s always a possibility.” Mayor Janacaro-Hensleigh said this after Commissioner Leonard Wortman noted that at the Jefferson Local Development Council’s meeting that morning, the Board voted not to...
At the June 14 Jefferson County Commissioner’s meeting, held in Cardwell, Commissioner Leonard Wortman noted the Western Legacy Center (WLC) is “back to square one” after a recent decision by the Jefferson Local Development Council (JLDC). That morning at a JLDC meeting the board had voted not to purchase the Roberts Building on the outskirts of Whitehall by the I-90 exits/entrances. “The Western Legacy Center’s business plan is not in the best interest of JLDC at this time,” said Eric Seidensticker, JLDC’s Executive Director, on a phone call...
Let me be completely honest. The moment I put a newspaper edition to bed I am immediately beginning the next one. My computer layout is always a week ahead, while events of this week are still happening, and my brain is all over the place. Really, I'm not even sure my brain is attached to anything anymore, I feel like it is always just spinning. Last week I goofed. And I goofed big. When the election happened on Tuesday, June 7, that week's paper was already at the printing press. When I...
